I imagine that the one-way element of the contract is appealing for players - particularly of that age - to sign. He'd also seem to be much more likely to find himself in the AHL if on a two-way contract that didn't require waivers.

One or two way contracts have no bearing on waivers or waiver eligibility - it simply determines how much a player gets paid. Age is the biggest factor - anyone not on an ELC is required to pass through waivers to be sent down.

The other leagues are more popular, so they make more money and pay larger salaries. Amazon is paying a billion dollars per year for 15 Thursday night football games. The NHL can't get anywhere near a billion per year for their 1271 regular season+playoffs games combined.

Yeah I did make a comment the other day it'd be nice if Matthews ever did but at the same time of course this could be the consequences and it's not worth it.
I just like the top guys showing some bite but that can be done with roughing or a good hit without breaking your hand.

I don’t want Matthews shoved around and bullied like he was in the playoffs with Chiarot and Weber, but he doesn’t have to drop the gloves to enforce his will or get his opponents to f*** off. As long as his gloves stay on and he’s just engaging in scrums he should be fine.
