Per Wikipedia:

The NHL officially began referring to the championship series as a singular "Final" circa 2006. However, various North American media still continue to refer to it as plural "Finals", similar to the NBA Finals.

No link is provided though to support the claim.
Sounds correct. I think they wanted to distinguish the NHL from the NBA. And make it grammatically correct.

Stanley Cup Final but Conference Finals. OK, you say there is more than 1 conference final? Well there is more than 1 first round too. So that should be First Rounds?

FInals always made more sense to me because it's a 7 game series and not a 1 game final.

In the 90s they actually branded it as the Stanley Cup Championship.

I swear that every time the opposition scores a goal, the camera pans to Cooper and the assistant coaches checking to see if there’s something they can complain about.
