It's not an excuse, it's called living in reality. No, the team didn't get the job done... but it wasn't because Matthews was a no show. If that is what you try and pass as quality judgement.....
When duty calls, the cream is supposed to rise to the top,and lead the way.
Mathews has failed miserably so far.:(

Hellebuyck won't command that, and it is not a trade which makes us better. We need a good goalie, and Hellebuyck is good, but he is not anywhere near Marner.

Goalies just don't command that much, and we've even seen guys like Holtby fall off very fast at that age when they've had heavy workloads... even when they've been Vezina-level not too long before. It is the same risk for Gibson, except Gibson hasn't been great for a while.
Haha yeah, Marner for Helly is a bit much.

It'll be interesting to see what the UFA market is like for goalies this year. If MAF could be had for a reasonable price, I'd be interested in that and same goes for Campbell. Campbell might end up being our best option, assuming nobody is willing to overpay him. In that case I'd like to keep Mrazek if we can manage to ice a team staying under the cap. The hope would be that Mrazek has a good year (Campbell too of course) and then we can trade him at some point without having to give up anything in order to make it happen, and then use that cap space to add whatever we need the most at the TDL.

I always thought hockey was a team game.

I learned something new I guess. :sarcasm:
It's a tricky concept for some people. ;)

McDavid can sometimes bend the rules in the game by being something exceptional, but even Gretzky couldn't win alone, so it's kind of unreasonable to put this on back of Matthews. Last season it was easy to say that our topline let us down, but this year not so much. Would have been nice to see something epic in game six OT, but this isn't Might Ducks movie.

If Jets rebuilds I don't think player like Marner or Nylander would do it. We'd have to trade either of them for futures and try to build package for rebuilding team. Around Sandin and futures I think. Helly is one those goalies in the league that can make a difference at the moment and isn't paid 10 million a year. They would ask Knies I think.

My coaching friend was bit hesitant about MAF this season. Talked about changing technique and playstyle a bit and not being on the level MAF was in Vegas. Trust his hockey sense and eye a lot. His father has coached for living. His son is promising goalie and he has worked with quite a time. I don't know if there is anything left anymore or was it just some tweaks and bruises somewhere that he had to adapt.

Odd enough to think that answer might still be Campbell. I just hope no one overpays him and his coming back with fair pricetag.

This will be interesting and bit terrifying off season to follow. I really think this is as close as career defining year for our players and office than one year can be. Tremendous pressure, since they have to play themselves trough at least first round. I don't know if handshakeline respect is enough and you definitely can't lose to lesser team. Best way to assure your place in the grand scheme is winning a division and playing against wild card team. I hope Matthews and Marner can work mathematics this off-season and train like they have never before.

It will be interesting to see what kind of moves Dubas is making. We may stand pat, but I think we have chance to make something bigger. Not Nylander big, but changing Muzzin, Kerfoot, Holl and rebuilding bottom six or something.

The big knock on Dubas IMO is that his moves have left us in a very tough spot with our goaltending situation and how he handles this will be maybe not quite "career defining", but in that ball park anyway. I said it a while back - Campbell might end up being the best option as far as UFA's go and like you said, we can only hope nobody overpays him and we get him at a fair price.

Goalies are so hard to figure so no matter what Dubas does, it will be a gamble. Nothing we can do but hope that it works out, whatever it is.

If Campbell was healthy the entire year, we might not even be talking about anything except how to fit his new contract under the Cap.

So how many years is someone going to offer Campbell at the $5mm per year range?

I think if you are going to gamble on goalies or any players for that matters, you want to gamble on more of a sure thing.

When we evaluate this era I think goalie department will be one big question mark. We have put time, effort and money on scouting, advanced stats and player development, but it seems like we haven't have as much detail on goaltending. Hard to figure why not.

I think our plan revolved around Andersen and Campbell was good find to be his tandem, but after Freddie's tires fell of a bit we had no backup plans. Gambling on Campbell with Mrazek wasn't that bad bet, but there was no sure continuity plan.

We have argued about Kadri trade, Foligno trade, Tavares and RFA contracts, but I think this issue is way more worse than those. You can twiddle about those trades forever and there are reasons and causes to every possible way. Cap gives some restrictions and overall situation with league affects your timeline. Like in vacuum Foligno trade is bad, but in that case during 2020-21 it was debatable trade and maybe the right player to go after.

No matter how this league evolves or what trends there are. You always need good goaltenders and you have room to develop few. You can still control your own goalie scouting, development and coaching department. Did we trust Freddie so much that we forgot that one?

I think that was one bad miscue from Dubas and Shanahan.

Good question. I'd say 3 should be about the max but you just never know.

Not many sure things when it comes to NHL goalies though, that's one reason this off-season is so scary.

Good post. We really have sucked at goalie development, and it's mind boggling when you see that over the past decade each team that's won had a bonafide, high level goalie save for Binnington who is average although plays well in playoffs. Matt Murray sucks now but he was absolutely elite during Pittsburgh's runs.

Are goalies hard to figure out? Seems like Toronto has a tendency to under invest and downplay the position, then talk about how hard they are to figure out. I mean if you go into goalie acquisitions with a checklist of size/athleticism/technique/track record and a modestly realistic budget, is it that hard?

The fact that we don't have much of a goalie coach department and consistently seem to find athletic street hockey goalies who can't track the puck or play a technical game would lead me to think we have a department that could use some extra brain power there.

I don't know if isn't just management.
People here are writing off Kallgren at 25, and ignoring where Husso was at 25. And then wail about Marchment having a good season after doing nothing in Toronto.

It seems some have already written off 22 year Sandin.

Some live on hindsight, ignoring foresight.

This seems an odd post when Dubas hands out high draft picks like halloween candy.
