Probably one of the coolest situations in hockey with the Blackhawks having to ice the amateur emergency backup goalie for the second half of the third period and he stops all seven shots he faces against the Jets. Awesome story!

3 weeks ago on March 9th, Dallas beat the Ducks and were in a great position to make the playoffs. Since then, they've earned 4 points. Haven't seen a drop like that at such a crucial time in a while.

Did it coincide with Bishop getting hurt? The Hitchcock hiring was a baffling decision, and the never ending goaltending mess is another negative mark on Jim Nill’s record. Yet everyone thought that team would go far with Benn, Seguin, Spezza, Klingberg, Radulov, Bishop, etc.

You'd think with Benn/Seguin/Spezza/Klingberg/Radulov that Dallas wouldn't have problems scoring goals, but they're only averaging 2.77 GPG (22nd). Kings are averaging 2.9 GPG (16th).

Hanzal has been a bust for them, and Spezza's game has really declined.

Damn, I missed it. I may or may have had played out that fantasy in my head more than I care to admit. Kudos for that guy!

Coming in peace yada yada

I'm very intrigued by your blue line situation moving forward, which has been made even more complicated by the Phaneuf acquisition. The Muzzin/Martinez/Doughty crew all are what they are, but I can't help but notice Derek Forbort's increase in usage. You then have the LaDue/Gravel/Clague tier--do any of them get looks as potential full-timers, as soon as next year?

My question is: are any of these guys expendable? I know the obvious ones aren't--I'm talking more Martinez or, God willing, Muzzin. New Jersey desperately needs help on the left side, and LA finally looks to be in a position to shed a guy or two.

I think many teams can match. Benn/Seguin/Spezza/Klingberg/Radulov

But have much better depth.

I had them as a lottery team and was surprised they were close in getting into the PO.

NHL Rumors: Kings and Dergachyov ... Where John Tavares Could End Up

Pierre LeBrun on TSN 690 on Tavares and where he might end up if traded. Blues, Sharks and Knights he mentioned , having the CAP space. But felt that the Habs should make it a priority.

“That’s the type of thing I’d be thinking of right now because they could do it and a lot of teams in the East can’t. The other teams that have cap room in the East, most of them don’t want to spend it – the Carolinas of the world. So among the teams that are normally at the cap, Montreal has the most cap room of all of those teams in the East. That’s a weapon they have right now heading into the offseason.”

Doughty is the only untouchable one there. I guess a Muzzin trade is possible, but a team would have to pay a ton. No way the Kings would shop him. Martinez is interesting because he's clutch and a leader. Could he be succeeded by Kale Clague? We'll have to wait a year to find out. LaDue could be a full-timer right now and has played well in protected minutes, but doesn't play the heavy game that the Kings coaches are looking for. Gravel is a bottom-pairing guy.

A team could swoop in and trade for LaDue, and it would cost a lot less than trading for Martinez. If I were a team building for next year, that's who I would target on this team.

I appreciate your thoughtful response. How much would LaDue cost?

Just for kicks, what’s the price you have on Muzzin and Martinez, individually?

LaDue could be a mid-pairing D right now, so I would guess that he could be had for a top-9 forward with speed. If the Kings don't see him as a long term solution, I would guess maybe a 2nd/3rd round pick?

Muzzin would be super pricy. We're talking a first +. You'd have to blow the Kings away with an offer. I mean you guys got Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson, and Muzzin is better than Adam Larson.

Martinez, hmm... ultimately depends on if the Kings plan to contend next year. I wouldn't trade him if I were Rob Blake, but a first round pick or a top six forward would be what I'd ask for in return if a GM called about Martinez.

Well we are really high on Clague, but he probably needs at least a year in the AHL before we start talking about making the senior team. We had high hopes at the beginning of the season for Gravel and Ladue, but they kind of stagnated. I think the only players on defense that would bring the most back in a trade would be either Muzzin or Martinez because they are both on sweatheart deals. With the acquisition of Brickley they may be more inclined to move a defenseman for scoring help, but we don't know what we have with him yet. And who knows we may draft a defenseman with our 1st rounder at the draft which would also add to our depth.

Gravel is a UFA this summer I believe so there's a decent chance he's not even on the Kings next season. Good chance he goes somewhere he'll get an opportunity to play.

I’m just wondering if you are JT and you look at that situation and roster, is it really that tempting to put pen to paper and sign with the Habs?

Price seems to be getting dinged up more often than not, their Defense isn’t very good and their GM is amateur hour.

Not sure if Tavares would want to play in a market like Montreal with all the media attention the Habs get. Just depends on his personality.

Vegas is interesting. I can see them being in the mix, especially if they let Neal and Perron walk, which I think will happen.

You know Bill Foley wants to continue to build on the momentum of a very successful inaugural season, regardless of the playoff result.

What say you, Dee?

I'm betting he's gone 100%.
Yeah, I think he's probably gone too. Forbort, Muzzin, Martinez/Phaneuf to play behind. Unless he wants to play on the right there's no spot for him.

Time to figure out what the hell they're going to do with LaDue. He'll be 26 by the time next season starts. Folin is also a UFA. There's the whole Voynov situation. The big Doughty situation. Could be changes on defense. Could be none outside of losing Gravel. Who really knows at this point.

The staff really seems to love Forbort. And Doughty can't stop raving about playing with him. They just got Phaneuf. Aside from those 3 I think everyone else is up in the air to be honest.

I wouldn’t be opposed to re-upping Folin for another year. He’s been pretty good for the most part in his role.

He may be looking to score a multi-year deal so maybe he’s one and done.

As noted above, the defense will be a fluid situation this offseason so it’s just going to depend on what Blake and Co. want to do going forward.

I forget which TSN reporter floated the idea a few months back, but it was a scary thought: What if Tavares took a short term slightly discounted deal to play in Tampa? Competitive club, no state tax, can play with childhood buddy Stamkos, and wouldn't get harassed like he would be in Montreal.

Not that we'd know for sure, but Tavares doesn't quite seem like the mercenary type. If anything maybe a little overly loyal since he didn't demand a trade from the Isles and seems to be giving them a chance to convince him to stay.

I completely forgot you guys also signed Brickley, which only adds to your riches. Jeez.

I like LaDue, but I think we'd be looking more in the vein of Muzzin or Martinez. We already have up-and-comer experiments going on with Butcher and Mueller, so I'm not sure adding LaDue does a ton.

I don't think we have the (expendable) horses to pull off a Muzzin trade, but Martinez may be a different story. I don't think we offer a 1st, but we'd certainly go 2nd+forward prospect. Does John Quenneville peak any interest?
