I think it's a done deal, Jay Onrait on TSN introduced the show previewing Monday Night Football and we'll talk about the Hanifin extension.
Came online, checked twitter and these forums and haven't seen everything. I'll post what Jay says.
Nice! Please do!

The thing about Hanifin that is different than the rest of our long term deals is that he could easily be moved, likely at a higher return than he would be as a UFA. Especially with the cap going up

He could be easily moved right now. A good young experienced top 4(top pairing even) defenseman under 5 million until the end of the year. That the Flames could even retain 50% on. Contenders should be paying a premium for that kind of asset this season. 1st + A prospect + something else kind of deal. Conroy should recognize that and the need for bringing in as much young talent as he can with what's on his cap right now.

A 50+ million commitment is a whole different thing. That's a lot more to think about for a GM. Not saying you couldn't move a deal like that for Hanifin because you're right you can, just that it makes things and the return a lot more complex.

The thing is this draft isn’t that strong. A contender’s first will likely be meh and I don’t see anyone giving us a true blue chip prospect for Hanifin. He’s the best player in the deal. Button has shown he can find middle of the roster players in the draft so I don’t really see the point of trading away one of our true players that can impact the game significantly.

The blue line (Hanifin, Anderson, Weegsr, Morin and Poirier) and Wolf are something we can build around. This team likely picks top ten the next few years and we can find sone scoring forwards. Outside of Celebrini, Eiserman, Hagens and maybe Misa it’s hard to project any of those guys as game changers. it’s really hard to guarantee a top pick, especially with Wolf coming.

GMs seem conservative and it seems a lot easier to trade for players like Eichel or Debrincat than to find them in the draft.

That's what I was hoping last year at the trade deadline going into this year's draft.
Lindholm 50% retention for playoffs and 1 year, Hanifin same, Tanev same, Zadorov same, Backlund same. We could have had multiple 1st rounders, but nope all Treliving did was trade Richie and Mackey for Richie and Stecher. Could have been a quick rebuild, fill the roster with guys like JVR and Kessel for 1 year this year and a couple of other veterans and throw this season away and hopefully have drafted well.
But nope.

Even if the draft is whatever that's where I believe the Flames need to look for salvation from the corner they've backed themselves into. There's no top end 1Cs or 1Ds in the organization right now. Without a piece like that the foundation will always be shaky. The first round is where you find these players.

I think all re-signing Lindholm and Hanifin would do is ensure is that the Flames don't pick top 10 in the next few years.

Not easy for Calgary it isn't. We had two young top line players worth re-signing and neither wanted to stay. And I can't even say I blame them really, although I still plan to for a while. Why stay in an undesirable market that has no idea how to win.

I agree boom, could have been selling a Huberdeau and Weegar too.

They haven't taken the last five good options to rebuild, I struggle to see them taking the sixth. But at least you could recognize the need for more speed and youth and skill. We have our Oettinger in Wolf, go find a Hintz, Robertson, or Heskainen. Dallas has proven you can contend with anchor vets like the Benn and Seguin contracts on your books. Don't envy Conroy's situation, but with some savvy management it's not an impossible one.

How much of this is Conroy trying to tread water so that Montreal doesn’t get a high pick from us?

Yeah need to be decent next season. It’s almost like Treliving knew he was leaving and engaged in internal sabotage. Was it necessary to promise a pick in the 2-10 spots??? He could of played hardball with Hughes imo and still made a deal.

No kidding. It was a 1st for one year of Monahan, how is there even a possibility of us giving up a top 10 pick?

I think its done or close to it.

My guess is 8 years at 7.25mil per.
I think it's close too. I think that's why he was scheduled to speak to the media but they hit a snag in the final touches that have delayed things.

I think you're close. I'm gonna say 7x7

He's rightly questioning all of these guys. Valji's head must be spinning like a top right now, or he's just shameless enough to be fine.

Some, but not a lot. I suspect a portion of that has to do with ownership, but for the intentions of playoff revenue and not worrying about a pick to Montreal.

Interesting read. Zadorov speaks out.
Sounds like the players want to right the ship as well, but it's easy to talk about, and tougher to do it.

Any more votes/re-votes for extend the guy, I'd love him here long term?

Personally I think if we trade Z and Tanev, As well as Lindholm, That this team will be bad.

We would have Solovyov, Gilbert and Oesterle as regulars and that is if everyone is healthy. This team doesn’t score a ton of goals. Those things together mean we are gonna be bad and could easily pick top 5 the next 2-3 years

Poirier skate laceration? What the heck is up with the bad luck? Yikes.

I hope he recovers quickly.

Explains why he played so little Saturday. I swear I don't even remember hearing his name once.
