The thing is this draft isn’t that strong. A contender’s first will likely be meh and I don’t see anyone giving us a true blue chip prospect for Hanifin. He’s the best player in the deal. Button has shown he can find middle of the roster players in the draft so I don’t really see the point of trading away one of our true players that can impact the game significantly.
The blue line (Hanifin, Anderson, Weegsr, Morin and Poirier) and Wolf are something we can build around. This team likely picks top ten the next few years and we can find sone scoring forwards. Outside of Celebrini, Eiserman, Hagens and maybe Misa it’s hard to project any of those guys as game changers. it’s really hard to guarantee a top pick, especially with Wolf coming.
Even if the draft is whatever that's where I believe the Flames need to look for salvation from the corner they've backed themselves into. There's no top end 1Cs or 1Ds in the organization right now. Without a piece like that the foundation will always be shaky. The first round is where you find these players.
I think all re-signing Lindholm and Hanifin would do is ensure is that the Flames don't pick top 10 in the next few years.
GMs seem conservative and it seems a lot easier to trade for players like Eichel or Debrincat than to find them in the draft.
Not easy for Calgary it isn't. We had two young top line players worth re-signing and neither wanted to stay. And I can't even say I blame them really, although I still plan to for a while. Why stay in an undesirable market that has no idea how to win.
That's what I was hoping last year at the trade deadline going into this year's draft.
Lindholm 50% retention for playoffs and 1 year, Hanifin same, Tanev same, Zadorov same, Backlund same. We could have had multiple 1st rounders, but nope all Treliving did was trade Richie and Mackey for Richie and Stecher. Could have been a quick rebuild, fill the roster with guys like JVR and Kessel for 1 year this year and a couple of other veterans and throw this season away and hopefully have drafted well.
But nope.
I agree boom, could have been selling a Huberdeau and Weegar too.
They haven't taken the last five good options to rebuild, I struggle to see them taking the sixth. But at least you could recognize the need for more speed and youth and skill. We have our Oettinger in Wolf, go find a Hintz, Robertson, or Heskainen. Dallas has proven you can contend with anchor vets like the Benn and Seguin contracts on your books. Don't envy Conroy's situation, but with some savvy management it's not an impossible one.
