Congrats to the Vernoninator. The only goalie the Flames have drafted and developed to really be much of anything. Calgary native as well.
My buddy's parents growing up had a lake house timeshare deal in Windermere and Mike owned a place a couple doors down. Played some shinny with us in the winters occasionally.

There isn't anybody else whose number I'd retire. Except maybe Ronnie Stern.

I’d retire Fleury’s number, personal struggles aside. Focusing just on the player, he should probably even be in the Hall of Fame as well if it wasn’t for the off ice issues.

I’m bias though. He was my dude growing up. Cup winner, Olympic Gold, 1000+ points. There’s worse players in the Hall.

It technically is retired, though not honoured.

Harsh, but fair IMO

This is borderline liquidation store budget for a coaching staff. And its not just the lack of names, but Dan Lambert straight up ran a piss poor PP in Nashville (besides last season).

If the team is rebuilding, I'm more than fine with it however.

Can I please get some vindication after all these years about ownership being cheap on management? :( Seriously, speaking, it feels a little like having a performance car but refusing to do regular oil changes and watching it blow up on the side of the road. It's so inexpensive as part of the bigger picture. Why would you as owner cheap out there and watch such an expensive component go to waste for such a small fee??

Thank goodness Treliving sorted out the ridiculous farm system situation. That was huge in prospect graduation going up a crap ton and losing less players to mental health situations.

Agreed that there is hope going forward for a few years of consistent top 10 drafts and prospect development without damaging them for a quick rebuild. Scorch earth might be more ideal, but it'll be unlikely, so I'd be happy enough with such an attempt.

The old boys club is actually the usual suspects that every team hires. I'm glad we aren't bringing in a bunch of coaches who have failed all over the NHL.

Rocky Thompson is probably next in line for AC role due to his success in the AHL. Dave Lowry is already floating around and he got a short stint in Winnipeg as HC.

It's honestly bizarre how many former Flames/Oilers (even if a short stint) ended up in coaching and management without being straight up gifted high level roles. Even dudes like Greg Nemisz (drafted in the same draft as Brodie) was an AC for the Oshawa Generals from 2015-2021 and Iggy is working on this as well.

Tanguay, Savard and a few others were surprises to me. Eakins apparently had a stint with us too. That's not including other guys like Rierden who was an Oiler but not a Flame and I'm excluding morons like Lowe, MacT and co who were given high level roles without the appropriate qualifications vs Conroy, Gelinas etc. who had to pay their dues as well.

What surprised you about Marc Savard? Or any of them? What's a hockey player gonna do when he retires from playing? These guys have spent their whole lives learning and studying the game. Tanguay and Savard were both very smart players with high end offensive skill. Savard already was an assistant coach with St Louis and headcoach of a successful Spitfire team in the OHL.

I think Savard is a fantastic choice to help with the offensive creativity this team lacked last season.

Not surprising - the Flames have emphasized "hockey smarts/intelligence" in their selection criteria ever since drafting Rico Fata, who... lacked those qualities. That translates well into off-ice roles with teams.

Not Savard specifically per se, but the volume of guys that seem to be part of the hockey machine servicing the NHL that wore Flames silks in the early 2000s surprise me.

I'm not saying negative things. I'm saying that it's not really nepotism because these guys had to pay their dues to get to the top, but it's also surprising how many are starting to pop up that had previous Flames affiliations. One of the other ones that has started to seem noticeable as well is the Avs and Detroit. Both were powerhouses, so that kinda makes sense, but Calgary was basically a nobody for a while, so it just seems like an odd coincidence.

Agreed. But somehow it feels like there's so many extras that used to be in Flames silks or associated with the Flames org. I might be wrong, but it just feels that way when I read the bios of a lot of other teams coaches and management. Lots of guys were dudes that didn't make it at all with other teams. A bunch that are popping up now near the top seem to have affiliation with the Flames.

Ted Nolan and Berube are some of the higher level first nation success stories. One of them wore Flames silks.

Thompson and Berube I think were enforcers for the Flames and not dudes originally lauded for hockey smarts and intelligence. Both guys have done well at AHL/NHL levels. Hockey smarts and intelligence would be closer to guys like Savard, Tanguay, Iggy, MSL etc. and Lowry is more like a dude in the middle.

I will say that the Boston board had a collective "god damn it" when Savard signed with y'all. Some were even propping him up for the head coaching gig before they brought in Montgomery last year. Y'all will be happy with that addition.

After Hamonic signed with Ottawa for two years, I immidiately though he's their Stone now. I'd be ok with Stone back as a #7 like last year, but there's a lot of questions what the D is gonna look like. Hanifin trade and what is coming back, if he's traded.
