I’m really missing him in our lineup. I thought he was one of our most consistent and impressive dmen for the most part this year. For some reason he has found himself in the press box.

I thought he was really poised, calm under pressure and cleared the crease quite nicely. Am I missing something here?

Thoughts….

Probably. But him and Benoit are a bit redundant as they're basically the same defenseman. If either of them could move into the top 4 you'd be more likely to see both at once again.

Lagesson's opportunities increased when injuries hit the blueline and diminished once the group got back to being fully healthy. It appears as though he sits at #8 on the depth chart and I'd deem that to be sensible enough.

Hopefully we see more of him, it would be good to have a small internal market for that 3LD spot in the offseason.

We need one of him or Benoit in the lineup next year on the cheap to complete a good value left side so we can free up as much cap for the right where we need big impact players sooner than later. The way we're going we might have a suprise ask from Benoit and an untested asset in Lags. They were pretty comparable when both were getting ice time.

When can I see Lagesson again?
We can't get out of our end.
When will we ever cover the under?
When does the second Salming's reign begin?
I hear what you're saying
But I swear that it's not making sense
So, when can I see him?
When can I see Lagesson again?

They need to move Brodie off the top pairing. He’s done as a reliable defender and has no physicality to his game. Reilly needs a Schenn type stay at home dman beside him to allow him to use his legs and move up ice more. Brodie and Gio are barely hanging on in the league and Lagesson and Benoit are physical but 1st not pairing material. Lilly is seems to be the only other option for Reilly and I’d rather see Benoit and Lagesson in the lineup than Brodie and Gio. Both are struggling now and will get destroyed in the playoffs. The Leafs really need to find two top six dman in trades but at what cost? Not sure this forward group or goaltending will get them through a round anyway.

Advanced stats are far, far from perfect, but are still interesting to look at. Lagesson isn't terrible in them, but does tend to rank out as not a top 6 dman for us. Some key stats for Leafs dmen this season:

On-ice 5v5 goals for % (minimum 200 5v5 mins)
1. (tied) Lily 53.8%
1. (tied) Rielly 53.8%
1. (tied) Gio 53.8%
4. Brodie 52.8%
5. Benoit 52.0%
6. McCabe 49.1%
7. Lagesson 47.4%
8. Klingberg 39.1%

On-ice 5v5 expected goals for % (minimum 200 5v5 mins)
1. Lily 54.7%
2. Benoit 52.6%
3. Gio 51.3%
4. McCabe 51.2%
5. Brodie 49.4%
6. Rielly 48.5%
7. Lagesson 46.3%
8. Klingberg 43.1%

Defensive zone shift start % (minimum 200 5v5 mins)
1. Benoit 11.2%
2. Brodie 11.1%
3. McCabe 10.5%
4. Rielly 10.0%
5. Gio 8.1%
6. Lily 7.8%
7. Lagesson 6.9%
8. Klingberg 5.7%

PP (5v4) points per 60 mins (min 20 PP mins)
1. Rielly 6.6
2. Timmins 5.5
3. Lily 4.4
4. Klingberg 2.7

PK (4v5) on ice expected goals against per 60 mins (min 20 PK mins)
1. Lagesson 3.9
2. Benoit 6.3
3. Gio 7.6
4. Rielly 8.3
5. Lily 8.5
6. Brodie 9.0
7. McCabe 9.8

Stats suggest that he's correctly placed as our #7 dman at even strength (or arguably #8, Timmins didn't make the minutes cutoff here but has good stats). He's sheltered more than anyone but Klingberg, but still has worse on ice stats than anyone but Klingberg. Obviously doesn't contribute on the PP, but has some very good PK stats, albeit in a small sample size (30 4v5 PK mins, Brodie leads the team with 103).

I think he's a nice depth dman for us, but I don't think he's better than any of Rielly, Brodie, Lily, McCabe, Benoit or Gio overall. He and Timmins make a good #7/8 dmen, though.

Think there's an argument to be made that he should rotate in as the 6th defenseman from time to time, not sat out long term.

I don't see why Benoit can't jump up into the top 4, especially considering who is in the top 4. Lagesson then has done enough to fill out the bottom pair.

Who do you think *deserves* to be above him this season?

Keep Benoit on the third pairing for this year, give him a little more responsibility to test him.. sign him to a nice team friendly extension, then try him in top 4 after that.... it would be so Leafy to move him to top 4, elevate his salary demands to top four, and screw ourselves.

$925 has been his biggest contract to date... earning $775 right now.

That's a pretty big increase... I'd offer him $1.2 right now, and see what his team says... that's a 60% increase.....

Benoit in the top four feels like a case of too much, too soon. I'd prefer any ascension in the lineup for him to be a matter of his promotion and not a demotion for one of the others/promoting him due to a lack of impressive options in the top four.
