Are the Red Wings...contenders?

T-1st in the East with 2 games in hand on Tampa. 12-2-1 against the West this year. All this recently with Mrazek in net and Howard out injured and without Datsyuk and Zetterberg leading the charge.

Well this late in to the season and with the points you have mentioned I guess the only answer is yes.

Imagine a good deadline pick-up, the Wings will be tough.
I don't know how they get anything worth talking about (without trading lotsa pick and prospects) because the playing roster is important top to bottom.

Zetterberg and Datsyuk are still #1 and #2 in team scoring. To suggest they aren't a factor this year in the team's success is complete nonsense.

Any team that makes the playoffs in this league is a contender, so yes. I don't really see any major deadline deal, but I think with the young guns playing well, I think it'll improve the chance of Kenny pulling in decent FAs now that they're showing they don't need to go into a rebuild mode.

I think he means this late December to current day push they are making (the hottest this team has been in years). Z did have one monster game in there and both he and Dats have been steady and contributing with usual defence as well.

excited for the future. still have arguably the two best prospects they have had in a while in the minors (larkin, mantha).

As of this moment they are #1 in the East. Also unlike many fluky teams, the Wings have a history of making the playoffs consistantly, so I'd say yes.

edit: Plus this year doesn't seem like there is a team head and shoulders above anyone else.

Nah. Wings are currently first in the East and have a killer record against the West but most would not even have them as a top 10 team this year. I prefer it that way.

Maybe a wildcard team.

More than they have been in recent years.

Datsyuk and Zetterberg are not as good as they were, but they're still quite effective. Couple that with the emerging young guys and it's a well rounded roster from top to bottom.

No, they are just long time Wings fans who have been hearing for years how they would fall apart with a salary cap, Yzerman retiring, etc...

I'm excited about this years team. They are really rolling 4 lines well and Babcock has them playing tight D, but they have the puck possession game and skill to score when needed.

All that being said, I'm fine with them flying a bit under the radar and not mentioned as much as some other teams in contender threads. I know what I see, what we have, and don't need the validation from other fan bases. It could be a fun playoff run this year.

I feel the same way.

If people feel the Wings aren't a competitive team, or even worth mentioning as a top 5 or 10 team? Doesn't bother me. The team has done it's fair share in feeding crow to many doubters with the whole "they aren't making the playoffs this year". "Nyquist and Tatar's production last year was fluky, and not sustainable". You know, the same old same old.

They are top in the east, and making it hard for the so called shoe-in's for first and second in the Atlantic: MTL, TBL. I continue to hope people still think Detroit barely can hold on to 3rd, and Boston will most likely bump them to a wild card spot. A breath of fresh air when this team isn't in the lime light.

Really hope they make a move for Yandle or Myers and make them serious contenders. They need a big move to get more hype even from the city of Detroit.... I hardly hear anyone talk about the Wings these days and it's sad.

They're very good but they'll be lucky to get past Bruins/Bolts/Habs imo.

Bruins are the only team that "scares" me just because of how their forecheck eats up Detroit defenders alive.

Tampa Bay and Montreal are both good teams that would be tough matchups, but I at least think the Wings have just as much of a claim to a series as either of them.

I think the Wings would beat the Bruins, and possibly the Habs. TB is so fast and lethal, I'd give them the edge. I would say this is the 1st time in a few years where I think we not only can compete, but also beat any team in the league, in a 7 game series.
