We were already a very fast team last season with everyone saying that speed was our #1 advantage. Now we've added Stemp, Lombardi and at some point this season Miller and Fast will join the team. Fast is a particularly good skater, and others are good as well.

We still have a lot of very good skaters like McDonaugh, MSL, MZA, etc, not to mention speed demons Kreider and Hagelin. And Jesper Fast is almost as good a skater as Hagelin.

So here's my question: do you believe we are now the fastest team in the league? If not, who is?

It's crazy we're having this discussion. In fact, wasn't team speed a bit of an issue in seasons past?

Also, what are the teams that are in contention with the Rangers for this label? TBL? COL?

Well I think they have four guys who qualify as elite skaters. (Kreider, Hags, J Moore, McD). Not sure if any other team has more than 2.

They have at least two prospects who may be elite skaters in Skjei and Duclair as well.

As for Fast, he's a good skater but I don't think he's close to Hags speed at all

I think it's Colorado. We don't have any speed down the middle to match MacKinnon and Duchene. Our team will get much faster as guys like Skjei, Allen, and Duclair make the squad though.

I don't think Fast is any where near Hagelin as a skater. I don't think there is a whole lot of competition for Hagelin. He is such an efficient skater.

I agree with your overall point, though. Even Kostka can fly. They definitely made it a point to add guys who can skate. I think the idea is to use the speed to hound the puck/puck carrier when we don't have it and use our speed to get behind defenders and eventually force them to back up making zone entries easier when we do have the puck.

I also feel our roster became more versatile. Lombardi, Stempniak, Mueller can all PK. Lombardi and Mueller can take faceoffs. We added two right handed shots for the power play with D.Boyle and Stempniak. We (hopefully) added a legitimate Power Play quarterback with D.Boyle.

Tanner Glass if deployed in a niche role and given very specific tasks, such as forecheck, pin the opposition deep with his size and strength, and go to the net when his linemates have the puck, if he can do that he can be useful. He can kill penalties. He also isn't a terrible skater.

Miller can skate. Fast can skate. Lindberg can skate. Futures like Skjei and Duclair as examples can fly.

As of now, our weakest skater is Marc Staal.

Speed, defense, goaltending, and depth are still our strengths.

There's no doubt we are a speedy team. Fastest in the league? Hard to tell. Carl Hagelin is one of the, if not THE, fastest skaters in the league. He holds the overall record in the skating part of the all-star skills tournament. Very hard to match.

Most of our forwards are alright at skating with another top speedster in Kreider. The rest of them might not have a great top speed but they do possess smooth skating abilities in general.

In terms of our D I feel we got a little worse in the smoothness department when replacing Strålman with Boyle. Out of the top 4 only McD stands out as a good skater. Moore and Klein both got quite some skating though, especially Moore.

Speedy pipe line as well with Miller, Fast etc.

I voted no, but I couldn't even begin to guess who actually is. Probably Colorado. Is this a conversation about lining up everyone in the league's skaters and having a race? Or is this about team speed? In the sprint, the Rangers have a chance. In team speed? I don't think we're close.

I agree about Colorado's speed up the middle.

I'd throw Chicago in there as well--Keith just about sets the standard for elite skating defenseman, and the rest of that d-corps is incredibly mobile. They've got handful of guys with cray wheels--Kruger, Smith, Saad, Sharp. And they've got an entire cast of good skaters around them. Plus their efficiency with the puck moves them up the ice in a hurry.

In the East, I'd say it's the Ranger's title to lose.

Stralman really wasn't that great of a skater. Better than G and Staal, but nothing even close to McD. From what SJS Fans have said, Boyle hasn't lost his legs. He's not as fast as he once was, but he's still a good skater. I think it's probably a wash in terms of skating ability

I'd definitely have to give fastest to COL, but we've gotta be close behind.

Colorado is tops, definitely.

Rangers are right below them though.

Love to know how any of you are figuring this topic out. Are there recorded speeds for players?

Kreider, Hagelin and Moore can fly, but what's the difference?

Speed and other abilities is the key.

No one here has mentioned the Kings, who also had two guys who flew in that series: Carter and Pearson.

Not saying Kings are faster. As I said before, no idea how to figure this out.

Boyle is a way better skater than stralman. He skates just like leetch

No way. Just because they have fast centers doesn't mean their a fast team. Our wings can fly and so can our D. Moore and miller got very nice speed. Stepan sometimes and brass is a decent one. We're definitely the fastest team in the league

Skills competition which did happen and hags won. And Kreider seems just as fast as him

I think you have that the other way around. As a team we're the fastest. Colorado looks fast because they only play offense

He definitely HAS been a fantastic skater, and it's probably one of the reasons he's still in the league. But I can't help but feeling worried when taking his age into account. In his prime better than Strålman sure - but at age 38? We'll see. And I don't think Strålman is a bad skater at all, very smooth strides which helped our transition game a ton.

Having fast centers drives the play a lot faster.

Did you ever wonder why Hagelin and Kreider were offsides a lot this year? Because they had centers who couldn't keep up.

Fast wingers are nice but coupled with fast centers really maximizes their speed potential.

Age has nothing to do with it. He even said his legs are fine and SJs fans agree. But like the other poster said if he does slow down than its a wash

You kinda just have to watch a bunch of teams and see how fast they are, really.

I agree with you but that still doesn't have to do if your fast as a team just because you don't go offsides

I think the rangers are the fastest team when they want to be. Some times they seemed to slow themselves down when they got a lead or we're down by a lot. Whereas COL consistently attacks
