Aidan Mcdonough is One of if not The best pure sniper in College Hockey. He has just told the Canucks that he will be returning for his Senior season at Northeastern next year.
Although he also stated that his intentions are still to sign with the Canucks as soon as his Senior season is over...

However, intentions change all the time. You gotta believe that that the Canucks might be exploring the option of trading Mcdonough this off-season or next trade deadline/off-season if they get the right offer.

Mcdonough would be a Free Agent in August 2023 if he doesnt sign with the Canucks then.

Mcdonough reminds me of James Neal. Elite shot, Average Skating

Jack Mcbain returned a 2nd round pick last week at the deadline.

That would be a benchmark comparison.

Mcdounough is 2 months older than Mcbain.

2022 Stats:

Mcdounough : 25 goals in 38 games
Mcbain: 19 goals in 24 games

NCAA career stats:

Mcdounough: 86 pts in 90 Games
Mcbain: 86 pts in 117 games

Mcbain- 6'4 210lbs
Mcdonough 6'2 210 lbs

Difference being Mcbain is a C and Mcdonough is a winger.

I wouldn't sweat it yet. Former NCAA champion (and a journeyman as a pro) Colby Cohen has been one of the commentators during the Frozen Four coverage. Paraphrasing something he said during a game last weekend regarding whether some guys should turn pro after the season: "Don't rush to sign. The AHL lifestyle is not glamorous. A lot of colleges have better facilities than the AHL. Plus you get to play with your buddies and live the college life."

Realistically McDonough might just value a senior year of college over a year in the AHL. This time last year, I had to talk down some Montreal fans who were worried about Jordan Harris opting to return for his senior year rather than turn pro.

I've heard anecdotal stories about some guys having regrets about turning pro early and wishing they had done one more year of college instead of playing in the minors. I vaguely recall something about Tage Thompson advising younger brother Tyce to stick around for his junior year; Tage turned pro after his sophomore year and split the following season between AHL/NHL. It's not inconceivable that Rathbone gave McDonough a rundown on what AHL life is like and that contributed to his decision.

true, but it's now common knowledge harris most likely would've walked if bergevin remained gm

So he wants to go back to school. Maybe he just wants to finish his degree, or spend another year with his friends/compete for one last NCAA trophy. He literally said he wants to be in Vancouver so why would they trade him?

I just don't see a guy of McDonough's caliber forcing the free agency route. He has an high quality NHL shot, and has good size, but aside from that every other attribute he has is either "meh" or questionable. Teams that have not been following him as closely as the Canucks might see a good shot, but not much room to grow into a quality NHLer.

Any other guy that comes to mind as having used this loophole, or been a threat to use it was Hobey Baker caliber.

Interesting, just reading that now although McCagg has been known to throw some incorrect tidbits. Even he cautioned that he might have to walk it back.

Should be about development. His weakness is his skating. Can he improve more in the ncaa or at the A level?
Then there is the competition. Aidan is 23 going on 24 in November. So he is playing against mostly 21 and younger competition. So racking up points against guys 3-5 years younger isn’t that impressive. Will he be challenged?

Another factor is the organization. Unfortunately since the Canucks had to leave the Manitoba Moose when the Jets arrived their A club has done little in developing non goalies for the Canucks. So that’s a negative in going pro until JR and Allvin can make changes to copy what Pitt AHL club has been able to do in terms of player development.

Canucks signed Will Lockwood after he did his 4 years at Michigan.

So the management says they would love to keep him and the players loves the town and has already friends within the organization......

Yes, that screams trade to me

thx..and there's a lot more on the French side that Harris let it be known he wasn't happy with Bergevin's hands off approach - which Gorton confirmed during his first interview. Bergevin's management was a disaster during pandemic..everything from player personnel to not being aware of Carey's drinking problem - or just not really caring enough to do anything about all of it

The OP is a giant assumption that ignores most of the facts in terms of what McDonough has said lately. Non-issue, stop being paranoid.

Are we this paranoid about all NCAA prospects now? Better trade them even if they say they want to stay.

Like I hate the Canucks and my team had Adam Fox refuse to sign with them but this kid seems to genuinely want to be a Canuck...

Fix the NCAA loophole of teams being able to sit on the rights and rot their prospects in college.

There is no loophole

For CHL players its generally UFA after 1 June first draft year+4

drafted. If you dont sign by 1 Jun draft year+2 then they reenter the draft. If not signed by draft year +2 they become a UFA

If you are drafed at 19 then you wont re-enter draft when 21 and instead become a UFA

For european players its signing rights thru 1 June draft year+4

for NCAA players its generally rights thru 15 August draft year+4

Most college players start their college career in AUG/SEPT after they are drafted in that same year. some red shir a year, some play in USHL for a year before going to college, and some might still be in high school. In other cases because the school districts birthday range for grand assignment are different the students could graduate HS at 17 and start colege before they are even draft eligible. thus they completed 1 yr of college like Owen Power. With Power the rights are shorter till graduation year which is just 3 years

If they leave school early before 1 January graduation year then rights revert to the 1 June draft year+4 formula or the 30 day rule---which ever is the later date.

the reason its August 15 instead of june 1 has to do with different college calendars. by August 15 all school years are completed and they start the next year around then.

many are for stupid reasons because of the perception they can declare for free agency. under draft eligibility rules they are all rights till 4 years after being drafted.

He wants to sign now and burn a yr, vancouver wants a next yr contract.
Then just sign the kid. The Canucks can use the reinforcements, and rather than potentially in the long run losing out on the player if he threatens to go back for his senior year then walk for free.
