Are Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson currently the best contracts in the league ?

Marchenko's one of those guys I can't take my eyes off of when he's on the ice.

I'd say it's frustrating as I typically study the goalies, but he spends a fair amount of time bothering the other team's goalie, so it works out.

Huge Marchenko fan and it's a great contract but part of the issue with the premise is you need to consider the full context of the team that has those contracts. Marchenko with his current contract on any of the top contenders right now is the best contract in the league. But for the BJs by the time they are contending and could use such an amazing contract, he'll probably be getting paid 3x that...

Exactly, not a good contract for the Jackets at all.

Marchenko is exactly why I want Matt Coronato signed long term. Maybe Coronato doesn't produce as well as Marchenko (Even though he has a higher pedigree), but if he does, the Flames are going to end up having such an excellent contract.

Hard to say about Johnston. He was a guy who hadn't really hit yet and signed a bridge, and is now hitting.

When I'm thinking best contracts I look at a guy like Slavin who is a #1D locked up for 8 years at $6.4M. By year three under a $113.5M cap, that contract deflates to $5M under current cap numbers.

Bobby McMann and Joe Woll say hi. McMann is behind stars so he doesn't get those PP minutes OP guys get and also he is in the Berube system. When he prices himself out of Toronto people will learn about him.

Woll is our starter at 800k caphit and that is not ELC.

McMann plays with Matthews and Marner and has a grand total of 20 5v5 pts. Meanwhile Marchenko has 35 5v5 pts, more than anyone on the Leafs. McMann is a good story but not in the Marchenko conversation for value.

Knies plays with Matthews and Marner. McMann has mostly been on the third line with Domi and Robertson

Yeah, I was bewildered by TB replacing Hagel on PP1 last year with Paul. I do wonder if part of that was to keep his next cap hit down. He's already worth much more than 6.5M in just the 1st year of his deal.

The athletic model has him as the 2nd best player in the Atlantic and worth 13M:
Only odd thing about that chart is the 35th percentile in penalty kill? Dudes done his best work shorthanded.

I remember when I said I wanted Marchenko signed for 6x6 and people thought it was too much. You have to take some risk to get ahead and that would've been a worthwhile investment. And iirc KJs agent already made it known they expect to get paid if he produces after taking this deal.

Term hurts them.

If we are looking at those types of deals, Bedard and ELC guys with the same term are the best options.

When we look at guys who are locked up, I look at players like Joel EK, Hagel, Protas, Thompson, Cirelli as great deals. Locked up until 2030 at contracts that are already steals, but will look incredible in 2 years.
