A friend who does not post here sent me this and I think it sums up the feelings of many of our posters. It is worth a read and could make for a good discussion of the 'State of the Bruins.'

My Plea To Unrealistic Boston Bruins Fans
Written by Adam Belue

Through 51 games, the Boston Bruins are tied for second place in the Atlantic Division, with a 27-18-6 record for 60 points. They have one of the best road records (16-5-3) in the entire league, they are fourth in the NHL in goals scored with 153, and have the second-ranked power play unit in the league. They have the third-best goal differential (+16) in the Eastern Conference, have gone 6-3-1 in their last ten games, and have one of the best records in the league in shootouts, which is a huge turnaround from previous seasons. They’ve beaten every team in the Atlantic Division, and have a winning record against every team except Montreal (2-3-0). They have also beaten every team in the Metropolitan Division except for Washington (0-2-0), who is the top team in the conference, and Carolina, who they have yet to play this season.

Yet there are many “fans†who take every opportunity to criticize this team. They say that they are not a playoff team, that they are too soft, and that they should scrap this season and trade off players in order to rebuild. They criticize the front office for trading away or walking away from former players, not trading away or re-signing current players, and not making a move yet during the current season. They criticize the coaching staff for having the wrong system, for not getting enough out of the players, and for not developing young prospects quickly or effectively enough. When someone makes a mistake and it costs the team, they are immediately terrible and should be traded or demoted; yet when they make solid plays there is little to no praise. People make ridiculous trade proposals, basically wanting to trade every Bruins player not named Bergeron or Marchand. They even want to fire the head coach who has taken the team to the playoffs in every season he’s been here except one, been to two Stanley Cup finals, and hoisted a trophy just five seasons ago.

Nothing against your friend, but it comes off as a whine about how people react differently to fandom. Just because he chooses not to critique the team, it doesn't make those who do bad fans. It takes all types and at the end of the day, whether you're vocal about the team's short comings or not, we're all still fans and rooting for the same team. It's easy to avoid those kinds of discussions if you want, and that would be a more realistic solution rather than expecting people to change how they like to follow the team, no?

A few overdramatic posters shouldn't be generalized as "Bruins fans"... and HFboards as a whole is far from a representation of Bruins or hockey fans in general. If you care enough about hockey to discuss it here, you know more/care a lot more than the average fan.

The Bruins are a frustrating team. Frustrating losses, followed by streaks of great promise. Obviously some things are said in the spur of the moment. Some people have dramatic opinions. And yes, it happens with every fanbase. Go on any team's board after a brutal loss.

Just to clarify my friend is not the author, just a STH suffering like the rest of us.

As far as I am concerned the team is exactly what I thought they would be - inconsistent. The home record is the only thing driving me nuts as I can't explain it and I don't think Julien can either.

In that case, since the author isn't a friend of yours, he comes off as a self righteous, pompous, baby that lacks the ability to have a candid and honest conversation about the state of this team.

This is obviously not a Cup contending team, but every playoff season sees a Cinderella team emerge and go farther than anyone expects, and I think these Bruins have as good a chance as any to be that team this year.

It would require the stars (Bergeron, Krejci, Marchand, Rask, Eriksson) to play like stars and 2nd-tier players like Beleski, Hayes, Spooner and maybe Pasta to have great playoffs.

Big weakness is the D. A healthy McQuade and maybe an addition at the deadline would help there - how likely is it that they bolster? Who knows. Probably unlikely to be able to add anyone of top 4 calibre - and if they did, it would likely mean losing Loui+.

But if they get their shifts together, I fully expect them to make the playoffs. Beyond that, I'd be very happy to see them win a round - winning two rounds would make me ecstatic.

Statistically this may all be true....but...

To say the power is 2d/3rd in the league is misleading....it is awful lately to the point of costing us games. Time to be realistic. I am not criticizing but....

Now I am probably the Bruins fan with the biggest rose colored glasses, but as constructed, this team will go nowhere in the playoffs....despite his all out effort, Connelly is not producing. You can not have 1/3 of your arguably top line not scoring

What happened to Louie....not lighting it up anymore either...another disappearing act on a top line.

The defense....wow...its been said all year....too many 5-6s, no 2-4 (maybe Krug) (and his offense has dried up....) They look lost and confused. I swear Z needs glasses.....I have never seen him have so many pucks get by or over his stick.

So realistically this team had slim to no chance to go anywhere... what I would like to see..

Trade Louie now for picks or someone who is at least a threat to score...like, but not suggesting, Pominville, Stafford type.. A lot of talk is hold onto LE ....is called asset management...suppose you are being told that you have 2 choices with your house....sell right now, get a fair price OR hold onto it and in 6 months you have to leave and get nothing for it.

Lets see what KOKO or Griffith can or cant do.

Shuffle the lines and get Connelly on the third...again, I appreciate the effort, but a player on lines 1/2 must be at least a threat to score.

Play Morrow....again, we know what Trotman, K Miller are

Marchand - Bergeron - Griffith or new forward
Pasta - Krejci - Koko or new guy
Belesky-Spooner Hayes
Connelly - Talbot - Ferraro - (Rinaldo)

I think someone taking that viewpoint is either a contrarian by nature, or, frankly, a rather unseasoned fan of the team.

Genuinely knowledgeable fans of this team know, in spite of cherry-picked statistics, that it's a largely flawed and volatile club.

Seriously, the only thing worse than the people who complain about the team constantly, are the people who think the team can do no wrong.

Yup.

All you need to do is look at how many posters are here after a win compared to after a loss.

I can almost predict by name who shows up and when.

Losses are heroin to those people. It must be tough going through life so torn by hoping for a win, but knowing if it comes it means the anti-Claude agenda has to take a night off.

Then again, there are the few posters who ignore the win and plow right through with the agenda. They are the ones I call "special".

I remember one poster on the night of June 15, 2011 was furious because the Bruins winning the Cup meant Julien wasn't going to be fired.

We had that and literally within seconds of skating the Cup around the ice *****ing that some players would command pay raises.
It was nuts.
