Game 3, Rangers v Flyers.

My brother and I were at this game and during the national anthem someone unfurled a giant banner underneath the American flag in the 400 section that read 'Dave Brown, eat shit and die'.

Does anybody know who created the sign and where it might be, or the story behind it other than dave brown running beezer the game before (how they snuck it in, etc)
I will also pay $1,000 for the original sign if the person can prove it is the sign.

I would also love to see a picture of the banner if anyone has it.

Also would love to read stories from people at that game as well. George McPhee beat the ever living crap out of Rick Tocchet. Great game.

I have a feeling it won't be easy to find this information. It's one particular game that was 31 years ago. The average age on this board can't even be more than 21.

No idea who created that banner or where it might be today, but I was at MSG in December of '87 when the Flyers came to town for the first time after Brown tried to decapitate Tomas Sandstrom about 5-6 weeks before. During the anthem, that banner was being held out by a section in the Blues right behind the Flyer goal. One of the finer memories from my teen years.

I would say odds are better on this message board than most to at least find someone linked to that section whether they be their kids/grandkids. Back in those days everyone in the section knew each other.
Theres a family somewhere in the tristate area right now laughing about how they made that banner while enjoying their christmas dinner.
Either way, I want it and will pay $1000 for the banner.

I spotted this post a while back and finally decided to reply on what is the 37th Anniversary of the game. I made the infamous sign in the machine shop where I worked, located at 187 Wescott Drive in Rahway NJ. I used an oversized King size bedsheet that was about 8 ft wide and almost 10 ft long. I hung it from the steel framework which supported the roof and stood on a ladder and spray painted the letters using a rattle can of flat black paint. My girlfriend (now wife) stood back and helped me center the lettering. I remember the first coat soaked in and faded so I went over it a second time to make it darker (this would later cause problems…read on . ). I attached some heavy steel nuts to the bottom edge to help it hang straight down. I wasn’t sure how I would attach it to the Garden railing which had short sections of plexiglass fixed to it, so I brought along some plastic zip-ties and some duct tape.
As far a sneaking it in, that was no problem. Back in those days my friends and I roamed the Garden like we owned it. In fact rarely did we actually pay for a ticket to get in (but that’s a story for another day). On the rare occasion when they did frisk you entering the turnstiles they would just pat down your sides so I put the folded up banner under the back of my Rangers jacket and walked right through. Once at our seats ( we always sat in the Blue seats on the opposite end of the flag ( 7th Ave), I realized if I hung it there we would not be able to see it. I got the idea to hang it down the far end and right under the American flag so everyone would have to look at it…including Dave Brown. I didn’t tell our friends in the section what the sign said, I just said “watch this ”
I decided to drop the banner during the anthem for added effect. About 10 min before the start of the game my friend and I made our way down to the other end of the arena and down to the front row under the flag. Remember now this is a playoff game and a tough ticket so the guy who is sitting in the seat is not happy that I want to stand in front of him and attach the sign. The Garden had been cracking down on signs for a while. He wants to know what the sign says. I tell him not to worry about it and I keep assuring him as soon as we drop the sign we will leave. I get it attached to the railing and wait for the start of the anthem. About 10 seconds in I drop the sign and damn! the sign won’t unfold because the paint was still a little wet when I folded it and now it’s stuck together. I reached down and grab the sheet with two hands and give it a big shake and thankfully it opened up into all its glory. My friend and I bolted up the aisle and around the upper deck so we could get a good look at it, at the same time the crowd starts going crazy. The Ranger players along the blueline were tapping their sticks. At the end of the anthem the cops showed up and gathered up the sign and were threatening the poor guy who had let us stand in front of him haha. When we made it back to our section we were treated to a heroes welcome and had earned ourselves lots of high-fives and free beer.
Over the years I have seen or heard about copy-cat signs or people claiming to be the originator. I always took it as a compliment that people thought so much of it and still remember it to this day. I can assure you though that my sign was the original. (Full disclosure here…a few years earlier I was watching a nationally televised game between the Rangers and Islanders. Bobby Nystrom skated over by the glass during a faceoff and a kid behind him in the stands held up a poster board that read “Nystrom Eats Shit” and I busted out laughing, thought it was just so funny. I’m sure that had an influence on me when I made the Brown sign. The intensity of the rivalry and the outrage from Brown running over Beezer in the previous game resulted in the “AND DIE” being added.)

Bluto I wish I could collect the reward you offered but I imagine the sign is laying at the bottom of a landfill in Jersey somewhere. It did serve its purpose though and it had a short but illustrious life. There was a hockey beat writer for the Newark Star Ledger named Walt MacPeek, he used to ride the same train as us . At the end of his column, he had a feature called “Slap Shots” and he wrote about the banner the next day. I still have a copy of it somewhere, I carried it in my wallet for years.

Also found this Youtube video which includes the anthem. If you watch you can see the people start pointing and a kid mouthing the words as he reads it :

Well sorry for the long first post. As Paul Harvey used to say “Now you know the REST of the story.”

Here’s hoping they can make a solid run this year. Go Rangers !

This is amazing!!! I thought you used it again the night I went to the game around a week before Christmas in '87, but I guess someone piggybacked off your idea given the circumstances. It was the first game since the infamous cross check Brown laid on Sandstrom. My buddy & I were in the reds (rare occassion) & I remember the crowd exploded when someone rolled it out. I will NEVER forget that.

Unfortunately, I think Bluto has left this site over disagreements with the way the place is modded. I REALLY hope he checks in & sees this post. Sad that the sign is no more, but it's amazing to get the back story behind it. Thanks for following up!

I made an account here years ago with the sole intention of finding out the rest of the story. Thank you for all you did that day. Its a memory that brings a smile to my face every single time I think of it. It is one of my favorite memories period. You are a legend and a god and nobody on this forum is worthy of your presence here. I'm surprised you haven't been given a ban by the totalitarian clowns that run this website just for simply admitting to having written (and laughed at) a naughty word in the 80's.

@Boris Zubov, here's your closure, my guy. My brother sent me the link to this convo and told me I had to respond to it.

And to every moderator on this website: Follow the advice that @BlueSeatBum gave to Dave Brown during the National Anthem on that fateful day April 12, 1987.

Getting off HFBoards was a great decision. Hockey is enjoyable again. This website is truly a cesspool of awful. But at least now we know the rest of the story!

Bluto out (forever)!

Love seeing those 1980's Rangers in that clip. Too bad Beck was not part of it.

consider the door open, if you will

On another board, someone registered and posted regularly for a few years with the name, "Dave Brown, ESAD" as the filters wouldn't allow it fully. One of the younger kids asked what the ESAD meant and when I read his explanation I was hysterical laughing. He did not claim to be the person who made the sign, but IIRC he said he was at the game for the 2nd banner because I remember him mentioning the Sandstrom part.

This is the level of human the league had to deal with in Brown. Just pure garbage by any definition. And you can hear how mad John Davidson got in this clip.
