Having a bit of a potential landlord situation. Long story short they want rent to be paid in cash every month. They don’t want a check, they don’t want an etransfer (Venmo/Quickpay), they just want cash. They’re nice people and I don’t think they’d ever try to pull something on us but our rent is high and without an easily referenced history of payment it makes me a little weary. AFAIK there’s technically nothing really stopping them from saying “we haven’t received rent from you in 6 months and we want our money” if there’s no proof of payment.

Last month I just printed out a word document saying “this document acknowledges the receiving of rent on this day March 1st 2019 from -insert my name- to -insert my Landlord’s name- for -insert rent amount-“

Then it was dated and signed by both of us. I’m concerned that it’s not sufficient enough proof, just in case my landlord is a total ******* and tries to say we haven’t paid rent.

Granted, the guy has owned and rented out this apartment for almost a decade to at least 3 different tenants, the building knows him, and he’s a doctor FWIW. I don’t think he’s a bad guy. This is all just precautionary.

If anyone knows whether or not a signed Word document is enough, or any other form of action I should be taking id appreciate it.

Any receipt signed by them I believe would suffice as proof of payment. I don't know what your rent is, but you might want to withdraw that exact same amount of cash every month from your bank so if worse came to worse you could present your bank records to a judge.

If it were to come to small claims court(which is where it would end up) then a document signed by both parties stating that rent was paid would be more than enough evidence, IMO. I'm with you. If it's cash payment only, you need some type of receipt for each payment, each time you make it. That document would be sufficient, I would say. A combination of that and your bank statement(as Illini said) showing the withdrawals would be more than enough to win you a case, if it came to that.

I'm assuming he wants it in cash because he doesn't want to have to claim it on his taxes at the end of the year. Did this just change? If it just changed, it's highly likely the new tax law screwed him, and this would be his way around that for next year. Basically not having to notify the IRS that he has a rental property, since he collects the rent in cash.

I’m 99% sure that that’s the case. Him and his wife are super nice. They even gave us 6 weeks free rent, which for a Gold Coast high rise is pretty substantial.

Yeah, I wouldn't concern myself too much then. Just make sure you get that signed receipt every month, and you're fine. You'll be covered/protected.

I don't even wanna know what your rent is.

Will be in Chicago in Sep from the 4th to the 20th. Where can I take the wife? She likes art, theater, and small cruises (river or lake).

I take it she’s never been? It’s really touristy but an architecture tour would be worth the time.

She's been 3 times but we have never really done anything in the city. I just saw the Go Card online. Has anyone ever purchased one? Are they worth the cost?

The Art Institute is a wonderful museum. And take her to Hamilton. It’s up there with Les Miserables as one of the best Broadway shows ever.

Couple weeks ago we talked about firing people and the debate of time of day. I was adamant to have respect and wait until end of day.

Wellllll.... I’ll be canning someone first thing this morning today.

First thing in the morning on a Wednesday. Hahahaha. I shouldn't laugh, cus that sucks for the person... but, it's funny that you have to do it on a Wednesday morning.

Guess it's better than the guy we canned on Monday at 9am this week...

Poor bastard could have slept in Monday morning, and instead had to come in and get fired and do an exit interview, then go back home. I guess they were gonna do it Friday, but he called in sick.

Doing an exit interview after you’re fired is bull****. I can understand if you tender a resignation in advance and/or are taking a job elsewhere, but screw it after getting let go.

It's kind of all one process, really. They pull you in to terminate you, and the meeting goes over why you were terminated, and other stuff. Dunno if it's a true exit interview in that sense. Some last an hour, some last 5 minutes. Most companies I've worked for in the past decade have all done exit interviews, whether when terminated, or when resigning. That said, quite a few terminations are 5 minute things at my company, so a lot of people likely just say "I'm not interested." and leave.

Yeah, I would immediately say I’m leaving. I’m not going to stick around after hearing news like that no matter how nicely they ask.

Not every termination is for performance reasons or things like that. Sometimes it's a fit issue, and you may be able to go back and work there again in some other capacity. Or a money/budget issue. Not all terminations are on poor terms.

This is a fit/attitude issue.

We had minor lay offs here, really just cutting deadwood, and they did it first thing in the morning on a Friday. I thought that was decent for those folks.

The whole "escort you to your desk" thing was awkward to watch .

Skated yesterday for the first time in damn near 10 years. Whoooo boy did it feel like it the first few minutes. Was almost like I'd never skated before, but it came back pretty quick. Still a ways to go getting the feet back but man did it feel good to be back out there.

Bad combination of duration since last skating, being out of shape, and skating in a brand new pair of wheels. All in all, successful, though.

Ha, yeah it's gonna be a little while until I'm ready for that. Then I'll be taking offers, I'll give you my agent's number.

Hockey's so funny like that. I mentioned this yesterday and you're the third person to mention joining their team already since. Bunch of scavengers! You skate at Johnny's?

BK, got Bauer Supremes. I've had Vapors for years but Bauer has this fancy foot sensor thing now where it scans your feet and legs and decides which model fit you best. I tried on both and actually liked the Supreme fit much better and went with those. Happy so far.

Hey, in my defense, I asked you a couple months ago, already, not just today. ;)

We're out of MB Arena, actually. We have a B team that plays out of Johnny's still, but it'll be a while before you'd be ready for that. Hell, I've been back playing for about a year and a half or two years now, and I'm not ready for B. Timing still isn't what it needs to be. Conditioning still isn't what it needs to be. Need to get back into way better shape.
