Anyone else think of the Caps as legit rivals now/again?

Man I hate that team now. :laugh: Even after last year I didn't have the level of hatred I have for them now. They're honestly starting to creep up there near the Devils to me. It's starting to develop between the fans and on the ice, too. :laugh:

No, not really. This Rangers roster should take this Caps roster out in 5, 6 games at most. In any other division the Caps don't even make the playoffs. Washington was a sub .500 team outside of their division this season. They went 4-9-2 against our division and 15-3-0 against their crap division. Our team is poorly coached and playing way below where it should be, but we should've routed them.
 
Since the close encounters of the 4th kind (Ribeiro) joined that already sketchy roster, I will never write lgr in caps again, because Caps suck!
 
From 1986 to 1994 these teams played four intense and heated playoff series where three out of four times there was an upset. That was the formation of this rivalry.

1986-Rangers upset a very good offensive squad in their Cinderella run to the ECF.

1990-Caps out grind a Leetch-less Rangers who could have gone to the Cup Finals with their offense and goaltending alone but had a very shaky D. And $#@@@ John Druce.

1991-The Rangers were looking to go to the next level but the Caps took care of them. This led to Neil Smith shaking up the roster and getting rid of Kissio, Mullen, and of course signing Graves and making trades for Kerr, Messier, and Beuk.

1994-Rangers took care of business in the series that got chippier every game. We all remember the Tikannen and Dale Hunter "kiss."

Yep, they're a rival for sure. You can't play four playoff series in five years and not develop some real animosity. It's probably more intense for me living in the DC area than for most of the rest. I still wouldn't quite put it on the same level as the rivalries with the other teams in the Atlantic.

Next year, it should heat up even more. And it will be interesting to see how the Caps perform outside of their current, dreadful division.
 
I hate the Caps more than any club.
That said, I don't think it's become that big a rivalry.

It is weird, they play so close and have now gone 7 in three of the past 4 series.
But you just don't get that intensity and hate, like you do with the Devils, Islanders, or Flyers.

And for the Caps fans, it's not like the Penguins.
I think both teams being 6-8 seeds, never 1-2 seeds, and just a real absence of that Montreal-Ottawa fighting is why.

It just is too tepid which is quite strange.
 
The rivalry took a hit between 1998-2004. Even in 1992, most Rangers fans were deathly afraid to face the Caps that postseason.

Whats so hate worthy when it comes to the Caps? I just dont see it, especially since Oates took over.
 
The Caps are a rival, but I still don't consider them in the same category as the opponents in our division.

For whatever reason, even though the Rangers have played against the Caps in the playoffs an awful lot in recent years, the hate between the teams hasn't really carried over to the regular season. It's really bizarre because I think our recent rivalry with the Pens has a lot to do with the 2008 playoff series against them. Maybe the intensity against the Caps in the regular season will pick up once we are in the same division again.

When you live in the area you just get an entirely different perspective. I went to school in DC from 97 - 02 when the Caps were not good. I went to games all the time and the arena was half full. The fans are bandwagon at best. They don't understand hockey for the most part, or at least they did not when I was there. On top of that, the arena is a dump, I'd rather watch a game in Nassau.

i think its because i've never met or known a caps fan

growing up in northern jersey, i've known several devils, isles, flyers, bruins, pens, sabres, and habs fans

but never a caps fan

without fan interaction its hard to have a true rivarly imo
 
It's certainly developing. And I guess getting rekindled if you were alive when they played in the late '80s, early '90s.

But I hate their fans and team less like I do NYI and NJD, and more like Pittsburgh. In fact, I really dislike their fans more than the team itself.
 
Nope. I don't really feel the same hatred as I do with Flyers/Devils/Pens games. This is like the Stars/Oilers rivalry in the mid 90s where they faced something crazy like 5 or 6 times against eachother and very little bad blood resulted.

Caps Center was a dump. Verizon Center is nice.
 
Their fans are god awful. Fans help makes a rivalry though. So only in the playoffs I think... reg season play doesnt carry over for whatever reason. I don't care about the team itself but fans of them are insufferable.
