Anton Khudobin back with Bruins for a shot at backup duty

Hotel Black and Gold. Anton Khudobin checked out, but he feels like he never left.

The affable Russian netminder is back in Boston with his eye set on regular work as Tuukka Rask’s relief man, after three years living the DFA life (designated for assignment) as an NHL backup goalie.

“I was like, ‘Man, I couldn’t believe I’m back,’ ’’ Khudobin said Tuesday, following his first informal workout in Brighton alongside an assortment of Bruins veterans and hopefuls at the Warrior Rink practice facility. “It felt like . . . it felt like . . . I just came back in the season. It didn’t feel like I haven’t been here in three years. . . .

No question Khudobin is thrilled. He eagerly ticked off what he likes about being back, noting how much he liked the organization and teammates in his first stay. From a practical standpoint, Boston feels like home, he said. He likes the ideas of going to Whole Foods for his groceries, and returning to his favorite barber shop when it’s time for a trim.

“It sounds like, starting right now,’’ he said with a big smile, “I am realizing I am here.’’

Very happy to have him back.

Always felt like I was seeing 110% out of him every time he started. On top of that, he clearly has talent.

Don't really understand why he was let go in the first place (not sure why some NHL GM's...hint, Chiarelli...think it's worth nickel and diming with either the starting or back up goaltender), but really excited to see what he can do this season.

It was his decision to leave, he wanted a starter role.

I'm not a Chiarelli fan, but Khudobin wanted a starter role and left.

Khudobin on Return to Bruins: "I Just Came Back to the Familyâ€

BOSTON – Anton Khudobin was born and raised in Kazakhstan. For him, it will always be home.

But when the 30-year-old goaltender touched down in Boston on Saturday, he couldn’t help but have that same kind of familiarity. It had been three years since he suited up for the Bruins, yet it felt like he never left.

“I have my home back in Russia,†said Khudobin, who played 14 games with the Bruins in 2012-13. “But at the same time – this is my 10th year in the United States – whenever I got to Boston, I always feel comfortable inside of my body. It’s not like I have to know something new.â€

As long as Claude has trust in Khudobin I'm good.

Hopefully Khudobin doesn't do anything to lower that trust.

given the Bruins D situation, I don't see him putting up more than respectable backup numbers, but I've wondered before if given an elite D corps in front of him if he'd look like a world class starter. He has always reminded me a bit of Timmay.

Ahhh, yeah. I think I can remember it now. Thanks for reminding me.

Regardless, I probably shouldn't have said the Chiarelli thing since it sort of distract from how I feel on the whole starter-backup goalie thing. To me, with what I'm seeing in the game nowadays, having a reliable backup (and paying a higher price than average for it) is very much worth it. Obviously the team was better, but the ongoing competition between Rask and Thomas for a couple of years, no doubt in my mind, let neither one of them bee too comfortable. On top of that, you had two very capable options to choose as the main starter should one struggle.

If your starter goes through a rough patch and your backup isn't up to the task of coming in and righting the ship, it really hurts you over the course of a season. It's a very undervalued position to me.

In conclusion, REALLY HAPPY to have Khudobin back. Have always liked what I've seen from him.

Absolutely loved Anton and hated when he left. Pumped he's our backup. One of the best backup goalies in the league imo. Nice to hear how much he loves the city too!

I for one like others here feel that this move acquiring Anton Khudobin is a very good one.
We absolutely need all the reinforcement we can get until this D gets better help on the back end.

I remember saying to my self when Anton left the B's.....I wonder what Anton "Khould have been"
Now, we will hopefully see what the result can be and I certainly hope he will be "A-ton" of help as our back up goalie....

I always thought Doby was Tim Thomas-like as far as ability goes. He scrambles and battles and is never out of the play. He doesn't have the roaming, 20 feet out of his net set of balls that TT had, but it was always fun to watch him save the puck. I'm glad he's back.

Loved Dobby when he was here. If he gives us what he gave in 12-13 I'm 1000% content. He's a competitor and from all accounts, a hilarious dude.

Ducks fan

He ran in to a tough spot with two talented and large goalies.

I was happy when we got him, and he never really showed what he could do.
Gibson came up and was awesome when Andersen was hurt.

Hope he does well

I remember him being a bit of a wildcard/inconsistent, but he's still the best back-up we've had since the Thomas/Rask rotation.

Thoughts on our backup after 2 games? I thought Dobby was solid for the most part last night.... but we really needed him in a few situations in the 3rd and he couldn't deliver a save. He needed to turn away that Byron chance (even though it never should have happened in the 1st place). I think he also needed to come up with the Mitchell backhand as well. I'm aware it was a backhander while falling to the ice and those aren't the easiest... but we really needed those stops.

Yes, he has to be better than he has shown in two games. The Bruin defense it not good and that adds to the pressure. But Dobby has to steal some games otherwise McIntyre might be our next possible chance. Subban is struggling as well.

I thought he was fine against Montreal. Made some big saves. He did all he could. Not his fault the team in front of him sucks.
