Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d still be sitting here dealing with head issues nearly 14 months later,” he said.

“At that point, my headaches got significantly worse and I started having vision problems, among other issues,” Alberts said. “What I went through during that time period was enough to cause me to completely stop any type of physical activity.”

“I’m generally not a bitter person. I still try to see the positives in this whole thing. If anything, though, I am bitter about how much this injury took away from my life. I loved playing hockey and working out. And more than anything else, it was my first year being a dad. And I spent most days going to doctors and dealing with constant headaches.”

Really sad article about a player that will probably never play hockey again.

It's a good read, More quotes inside.

Still not a dirty hit.. Feel for Alberts, hope he recovers.. But McGrattan had no intentions of ending his career.

Sucks, McGrattan isn't a bad guy from what I've seen (surprising he never reached out to Alberts, but still) I think he should have been faced some supplementary discipline for that one, I think the league definitely dropped the ball there.

Hopefully for Alberts sake he lives life symptom free and be there for his wife and kid no point in risking it after all this time.

How was it a dirty hit? There was minimal head contact. Reminds me of the hit Sid took that kept him out for a long time, albeit this one was a harder check

I suffered a nasty concussion playing soccer when I was 22, and I could not exercise until I was 25 because I would get very dizzy on the most minimal of exercises. Even walking for more than 10 minutes or walking fast would trigger it. I never had one prior, so there doesn't necessarily have to be history to cause a bad effect. It really depends on the person.

I hope that Alberts is able to return to his normal life in the coming years.

What is not obvious on initial viewing is that McGratton butt ends Alberts in the chops. Kind of looks harmless but clearly worst than it looks in terms of results

Yeah, none of this sits right with me, even after all this time. Sure, the hit doesn't LOOK that dirty, but I don't know how you shoulder a guy in the head, end his career, get no suspension whatsoever, and don't even contact the guy to say "Man, I'm sorry about how this ended up for you."

It just doesn't sit right with me at all. And I can promise you that it's kept Andrew Alberts up at night, too. That's if he can sleep right at all with the constant headaches and ringing in his ears.

Who cares about his hockey career, this is something he is dealing with on a day-to-day basis. He's really struggling, or has struggled I should say.

That's really unfortunate, I didn't realize Alberts has been having such troubles. I seriously hope he's going to walk away with minimal or no symptoms, would be awful if this affected him every day for the rest of his life. Thoughts and prayers with him.

I am surprised that Alberts never heard from McGrattan. It's well-known that McGrattan frequently reaches out to enforcers around the league whenever possible to try to help them out with things like substance dependency and addiction. The play was quite similar to Byron's hit on Sedin last season where the hitter expected the target to be positioned differently as they made their approach. In that case, Byron immediately contacted Sedin to make sure he was ok.

It's disappointing how bitter Alberts is towards the league. I know that it's a huge loss for him in terms of how his life changed, but it's surprising that he still thinks the league was following some agenda with not suspending McGrattan rather than just judging it to be non-malicious (something with which a great deal of objective viewers agree). Anyway, things like this really suck. It's a product of the game, though, not any one player.

^ Well if he's so known for reaching out, he sure dropped the ball majorly here...

Perhaps no "malicious" intention but I sure would be pissed off if I was in Alberts' shoes and my career ended on this type of hit with no repercussions whatsoever. Can't blame the guy how he feels toward the league at all. Not at all "disappointing" how he feels towards the league.

I remember watching this and thinking he was selling it.

Very sad.

That "he was our pylon" comment was gold.
