Confirmed with Link: Andersen 1y Ext 2.75m

We still need a goalie. Freddie is getting older and hasn’t really at any point been consistently reliable. It’s hurt us in the playoffs before, we’ll see if it does this year. I get protecting ourselves in case we can find something that makes sense, but signing on for another year of the same doesn’t really further the cause at this point. It’s insurance that may or may not actually help if we need it.
Is it possible that they know they have oodles of cap space next year and that this is a holding transaction that doesn’t stop them from trying to find a younger/potentially as capable goalie too?

FWIW/ the marketplace would hold the Canes up without having Freddie as a roster player too.

The term tells you everything. Say what you will about Freddie and his health. He has clearly done Carolina a solid in his negotiations. Last time when we re-upped Freddie for two years and Rants for a year on the same day, it was made clear we let Andersen see what's out there. He chose to stay. I have a hard time thinking ours was the best AAV.

This year, when he legitimately could have held this over us by virtue of him being one of the only good goalies left, he signs for 1 year.

I think that says a few things.

1) he likes it here
2) he likes playing for a team who will.give him half the season off (i.e. deal with the inevitable injuries) with no media pressure.
3) he cares more about fit than earning every dollar.

4) given the only other decent UFA goalie is Jake Allen, I think the Canes hedged their bets that they'd rather stay with the guy they're used to than run a big risk someone else gets Allen first. Otherwise we are legit screwed.

It's a shame Andersen re-entered the draft. He would have been a cool Hurricane for life player and I think in hindsight he would have done really well here supplanting Ward (years earlier than his agent thought).

I don't think a single person disagrees with what you said.

Now name the goalie that is at least close to as good as Freddie, isn't injury prone, and the most important skill available.

Everyone is available for the right price. Whether the Canes are willing to pay it or not is a different question. If, for example, we dangled Svech to try and pry a true #1 from another team, the options become more numerous than simply hoping for a FA pickup or grabbing someone’s backup

I don’t think anyone disagrees with you either. Yet I think it’s fair to hope the search is still actively going on as we speak because Freddie can be great, but he hasn’t been around when we need him (or at his best) more than once. He’s frequently out. The award doesn’t mean much when he’s out for months at a time, especially when it affects the playoffs.

I think it’s fair to recognize the market and make sure we have coverage next year. I don’t see us as stable though. We’re one crazy Koochie moment away from a third string goalie in round two.

I hope that’s the case. I’d think we’d all hope that. The concern for me is that management loves a good value deal, and it seems like it’ll rely on getting that bang for the buck over chasing upgrades at times. It’s a smart business play to go one more year if you think he’s got it in him. In this case we all suspect the goalie market is pretty soft and this is likely the best move at this moment. Let’s hope if an opportunity pops up over the summer we still go for it.

lol trading Svech for a goalie would be a mind boggling consideration. The team has it right not investing a ton in the position as it’s voodoo regardless

You could be paying hellebuyck like 10m or whatever to choke
That’s one of the biggest criticisms of Freddie’s career as well, and it’s been earned at times. He hasn’t eliminated it to be honest, though he was off to a good start this season. Against a half staffed Devils team. I think we all suspect he can do it, but he hasn’t really done it yet.

I was hoping we'd move on from Fred.

With his injury/illness history and unreliability, I consider him slightly above worthless at any performance.

Wish we'd just cut bait.

Case in point, the 3rd period in Game 6 against the Rangers last year.

I think Andersen would excel as a backup. His level of play is great, and is at the higher end of NHL starters. But, he is prone to injury.

As a backup, he would need to play much less and would hopefully spend less time injured.

There just aren't really any #1s available that seem like good options...

Who's the best KHL goalie with no NHL affiliation? How much would it cost to buy out their contract?

You win long-term from cost efficiency plays like this. I have zero complaints. All those millions in cap space will be used, but the advantage of Andersen is that you can take those extra few million in cap space and outbid for players that really matter. I have my doubts that Marner will leave Toronto, but another choke job in the second round and the calculus might shift.

I'm of the opinion that the only way Marner stays in Toronto, at this point, is if they win the Cup. I imagine the endorsement deals he would get from that alone could be 3-4x of his Leaf contract.

Otherwise, what with the Leafs open to trading him this year & the media blame game if they lose out again, he'll be outta there.
