And that roster spot will have to be replaced with another player.

They also could have simply placed Vaak on waivers.

Trading fully buriable players isn't real cap savings.

They replaced 1 roster spot at 4 mill (after retention) with a roster spot at 8 mill.
Fair enough. Makes my point even more although the overall cash difference is pretty even ($1 million IiRC). The lost retention slot is the one that is potentially problematic

The problem is those "few key positions" are essentially the entire defense.

Wouldn’t you say the defensive prospects are “behind” the forward group in terms of timeline of the talent coming up…Lindstein, Jiricek, etc. Broberg was a vital get as a “bridge” young guy but I’m not sure you guys have a ton of options.

Suter is gone after this year, Krug is probably done and there’s no guarantee Leddy will still be his old self when he returns. Either way Leddy and Fowler are not exactly here for the long-haul.

Seems like Monty looked at the fringe guys on the current NHL roster and the group down in Springfield and said “yeah, I need something a bit more stable to build our defensive identity off of for another year or two.”

I mean, I’m not denying I thought the trade seemed strange. I get that it makes the blueline core look oddly old and expensive for a non-contending team.

Brock Nelson and Brendan Gallagher are now the only 2010 draftees left with their original club. Never expected Gally would be the longest since Nelson is likely gone at the deadline . . .
Bryan Rust is still with Pittsburgh, and Fred Andersen is now with Carolina who drafted but didn't sign him in 2010.

Less than 50 of the 100 or so 2010 draftees thay played in the NHL are still playing. Careers are short, mostly.

BTW, same story for 2009: Hedman, Kreider, Cizikas, and Anders Lee still with their draft teams. Most players are retired or never made it. Maybe less than 30 still playing?

i will say, fowler should find more success playing less minutes and under an actual NHL caliber coach like montgomery. he's not the same player he once was, but i have no doubt he'll play better with the blues than he was with the ducks (assuming they don't play him as many minutes)

Wow! So Trouba in and Fowler out…

Anaheim did Fowler bad, 9 games away from 1000 as a Duck…brutal
at the end of the day, pro sports are a business. the players know that. fowler probably doesn't even care and preferred to be traded as soon as possible

Fowler has a four-team trade list.

You think he gives a shit about 1,000 games in Anaheim? He probably would not be going to St. Louis now if he doesn't want to -- unless by some coincidence they're one of his four teams.
