Yes, and the return on Vatrano will be larger with retention. Same with Dumoulin. And Gibson can’t be traded without it. Vatrano won’t likely get much of a contract from us unless his scoring touch returns, and if he really wants to play here, can return after a few months elsewhere - nobody is giving him 8 years.

I’m not remotely sold on Trouba being good enough to deserve a long contract, nor convinced that he will want to play here with our clueless coach.

That was my entire point. A late 2027 2nd is not exciting to me.
I hear you, there is 0 chance Cronin is our coach next season. My guess is, the next jim Montgomery that is fired will be our new head coach . We will even give him term, because what’s it matter to verbeek? If the new head coach sucks verbeek will
Be fired anyways. So why not at least give said head coach some term to make sure we land him

Definition of bittersweet. It was time. Here's hoping he does great with proper deployment and a real coach.

Dunno what anyone expected on the return. Putting aside how bad he's been (obviously you trade for him because you think he can bounce back), Verbeek hasn't been the best at getting value out of trades he has to make. Everyone knew he had to make this one and Cam's NTC fully controlled the process, it wasn't going to be all that good even if he hadn't been brutal this year.

Biakabutuka is clearly Verbeek trying to fix the vowels/60 metric he screwed up by shipping Vaakanainen out, I know nothing about him but I'm fully in favor.

It depends ... he's already forced a trade off one team and tried to block a trade from his 2nd team because of his wife's career needs. If she gets a gig in SoCal, it would not be out of the realm of possibility that he will take less than he otherwise would to play for the Ducks, as he clearly prioritizes her ambitions when it comes to his own career decisions (and let's be real, she's got a lot more time left on her career than he does).

In his case I don't think we're bidding against the whole league like we usually are.
If you’re going to play for a discount in Anaheim, and are playing well enough to deserve a decent contract, do you want to play in Orange or in black?

And thus ends the misery of Fowler being shit on endlessly by Ducks fans.

I dont think Ive seen a player more misused for as long of a stretch as Fowler was, and really got screwed by the early Scotty comparisons. A #2 who was consistently put in a #1s spot, never got the help he needed and had to shoulder way too much of the load.

One of the best Dmen to play for this Org. I just hope he will be remembered better than hes been treated by many.

Good luck in STL Cam!

The return matters little to me. We get a little breathing room from the logjam that was created and dont have to hear "Cam sucks" or "Cams too soft" every day. Pretty much its a 2nd rounder for Cam with some retention. Could have been worse.

So long. Fowler. You've done a lot for this franchise but it was time for both parties to go their separate ways. It's kind of telling that he wanted out so bad that he didn't care about 1000 games. Not a good sign for the team environment.

Anyways, this should be positive for the Ducks and I hope he finds his groove in a sheltered role on a better team. I'm rooting for the Blues if they make the playoffs.

i always wonder how fowler would've turned out if 1. the organization hadn't tried to make him into a 2-way d-man and 2. if the doan hit his rookie season hadn't happened

They’re welcome to, but it should be with the understanding that it’s not objective
I mean yeah, people are having feelings? That's what people do? Sports fandom is emotional, more at 11?

The fact that this is the place that you feel the need to double down on "anyone sad about a long term franchise fixture being shipped out after a brutal decline needs to know they are being emotional" is weird.

Kinda messed up they didn't let him get to 1000 games AND traded him so close to Christmas.
Based on the stuff Friedman has put out there (and, yes, a little bit of Cam's body language and seeming lack of effort in games, which could be nothing), it seems this was initiated by Fowler. My guess is that he's so frustrated with the organization that he doesn't even care about the 1,000 games. Or it would feel hollow if they did a ceremony at this point just to trade him right after.

That's more damning to me than thinking the organization coldly traded him before reaching the milestone. Fowler hated it so much here, he didn't even WANT the milestone.

Admittedly, these are my conclusions from what I've heard and read.

They’re welcome to, but it should be with the understanding that it’s not objective
Sports fandom is inherently subjective. We yell for dudes wearing different shirts than other dudes.

I for one am super excited he is going to the Blues. They are 5-2-1 since Montgomery took over, and we can see how much Fowler improves individually and helps the team with a proper coach. Fowler is -129 for his entire career in plus minus, I think with a real coach, he probably gets that lifetime plus minus to at least -80 at the end of his contract.

It now leaves Gibson as the final player from the 2017 WCF team. Crazy that was just over 7 seasons ago and 22/23 man roster has turned over.

Yikes. Awful, awful deal.

Couldn't get forward help, but adds another defenseman.
that doesn’t make it an awful deal. Fowler isn’t very good and isn’t needed here anymore.

Honestly just getting rid of him for anything is good at this point.

Hoping for a resolution on Gibson next

The coaching staff has proven over and over again that they cannot look at Fowler and Gibson objectively. They’ll overplay both of them no matter what the consequences are

Sure, shouldn’t impact people’s view that this trade is objectively a positive for all involved though

I can't help but be sad that a guy that we drafted, that played for us for almost 1000 games is gone, but it's the right thing for him and the team. I wish the best for him.
For a guy who could have asked out at the time Lindholm, Manson, Rackell were dealt in 2022, guess he wanted to stay at that point in time. Now 2.5 years later, he opts to waive his 3/4 team NTC to go to a non playoff Blues team with Ana retaining 38% to drop his cap hit down to $4 mill for the acquiring team.

The getting something exciting for Fowler ship sailed a couple of years ago.
Yeah, Verbeek’s biggest mistake (besides Killorn and Cronin) in his tenure so far was not trading Gibson and Fowler at the same time he traded Lindholm/Manson/Rakell.

Should have completely nuked everything

We would have been exactly just as bad the last 2 years without them anyway.

It was a miscalculation IMO
