It is fairly well-known by now that Los Angeles Kings right wing Devin Setoguchi has had to battle alcohol and substance abuse in order to attempt a comeback in the National Hockey League with the Kings. But what you may not know are the depths of that abuse—how bad his problems were.

You also probably don't know about his family's legacy in Canada, with his paternal grandparents having had their assets—money, real and personal property—seized by the Canadian government, followed by their unjust incarceration in Canadian concentration camps during World War II. Their only crime, despite the fact that they were Canadian citizens by birth, was that they were the same race as one of Canada's enemies—they were believed to be one in the same.

They were no longer considered to be Canadian.

I wrote this story on assignment for the English section of the Rafu Shimpo in late November. They have allowed me to reprint it here...

An Heir of Resiliency

Gann, outstanding article. Hopefully, Seto keeps his demons away. I also hope he either gets back in the lineup or gets the opportunity with another team.

So Canada had their own Japanese Internment. Wow. I did not know that.

Only about 1/5 as many people, but their treatment was reportedly WORSE
than in the US.

Just a reminder on the dangers of scapegoating, and what it can lead to, even in a supposedly "free" society.
