Nah the size is still a thing.

He had no business dropping to the 5th though. I had him as a solid 3rd rounder.

Most draft rankings had him somewhere in the third, I believe.

I definitely can't see him going any later than that now. But yeah, maybe he wouldn't quite get up into the 2nd.

I love Berard and make that abundantly clear from day one. I don't think the size will be as much of an issue on the wing, as he's a really good skater and plays bigger than he is, but in the middle it could be an issue.

I thought he would go as high as two and as low as early four. More likely the higher end of that. I wasn't really following along once things started up and was shocked when I saw we picked him in the fifth.

CSS had him 45th among NA skaters, so overall that's a late second/early third. McKeen's had him 40. I saw some other fan-produced mocks that had him in the second.

I think him going in the fifth was a much bigger surprise than it would have been for him to go in the second. JMO.

I did not watch the Canada/Germany game and only made reference to the out of control score and the suicide pass to Schumacher that ended with Schneider catching him in the head. I did not know Germany was undermanned by 4 players in the game and without their top goalie so I'll take back some of the snarky things I said about them.

I actually saw Berard as a solid 3rd round and Vierling as a late 3rd--maybe 4th rounder. Both those picks were really solid for the 5th round. Actually I'm pleased with Garand in the 4th too. The iffiest pick we made in the draft was Tarnstrom.

To add to this, The Black Book had him 52nd OA, and their only knock not related to his size was his defensive engagement.

Most of the quotes they had from other scouts were some variation of "He's good, but he's small."

Was wondering when a hit like that would happen. Couldn't have anything to do with the celebrating after every goal. Looked pretty nasty.

Loving the Berard pick. This is type of game the Rangers need more of

They drafted a lot of that this year.

Outside of Lafreniere, this was my favorite pick in the draft. He is going to look like a massive steal a year from now.

Like @Harbour Dog said, the size is the only real draw back at this stage. When the rest of the game is there, undersized tends to equal undervalued.

I really didn’t have a problem with the hit. I’m glad he’s our prospect. I look forward to some nasty stuff from our backend.

and in all honesty I hope NYR turns into a nasty team.
Absolutely. It was hard, but not dirty, which is exactly what you want to see. You just want him to be a little more aware, so he doesn’t take himself out of a game by accident.

i don't get the size question with him at all. he's 5'9, most teams maybe prefer a bit more height as a general rule, he's prob idno 2-3 inches shorter than the avg player? i'd be shocked if he or that put him outside a standard deviation. the only thing that would concern is if he was slight which you can see he's not - as long as you're over like 5'7 and have the density / speed or you're johnny gaudreau, there's no issue with him at all. a lot of those guys are some of the best players in the league and best skaters...that low center of gravity can be a huge advantage. he's a solid kid, he's light right now sure but he's not scrawny, you can see he's going to fill out to an nhl frame. he's looked awesome so far at the tournament. both games he's had 0 hesitation, played a simple, consistent, gritty game - no fear going to the hard areas, effective on the forecheck creating loose pucks...plus shown great speed and flashed some skill and playmaking with the puck. way, way better than my highest expectations to date..first in even making this team and then how well he's played, and even raised his ceiling for me with the skating he's shown. could not be happier with this pick, obviously because it's looking great but even more so for the style. i don't think there's any doubt he'd go 2nd round in a redraft, i'd for sure take him over cuylle every day of the week. also, not something i generally think means much but think its worth noting with him - he was eligible for this draft by like a week. like i said in most cases i think its overthinking but given how young he looks think its worth considering there being some chance he still has some big leaps ahead of him.

Hit to the head.

If you watch the replay over and over from different angles, I think you guys would agree he ultimately missed the hit he was going for.

Schneider had committed to the hit and Schumacher’s size and body positioning when receiving the puck was a disaster in the making.

9/10 times this wouldn’t be a penalty in the NHL because he’ll be playing against larger forwards. Forwards who protect themselves a bit better too. But he’s not In the NHL quite yet, and he needs to do a better job of reacting there.

Overall, I’m happy this kid has balls and can make a hit. He just needs to pick his spots better, especially in tough situations like this.

I think we basically agree?
