Bear in mind he was like the 3rd? youngest player in the draft, so he's one of the youngest guys in this tournament
Yep definitely room for more improvement which is good. He’s really been awesome to watch this tournament. His line has been one of the best lines of the tournament.

he’s not. That’s where I said we need to be careful with our expectations for him but this kid is a bottom 6er for sure in the nhl. I’d be really surprised if he doesn’t get to the show

So they drafted Jed Ortmeyer this time?? Not sure who I would compare him too but even Ortmeyer scored a little bit in college.

I don't recall Jed Ortmeyer playing in the WJC. Berard is better offensively, while having the same type of motor that Jed had. If he turns into a slightly more offensive version of what Jed was, we should be thrilled.

I think he gets the most out of his tools and that’s what makes him dangerous. How that translates into pro scoring remains to be seen. That’s where I tend to see Callahan in him.

On the surface, Callahan shouldn’t have posted the pro numbers he did. But he busted his ass. If Berard can do that, and add some strength to his speed, he could be someone who overachieves if he finds chemistry with the right linemates.

I started thinking, playing for the US national team as a forward at the WJCs is a pretty exclusive club for NYR draft picks.

The first of our draft picks I can recall at the WJC are the Ferraro brothers that played during the Forsberg years. I saw one of those games live in the earlier 90s, but I was pretty young so I don't have that great track of those years around 92-93. Anyway they of course destroyed the WJC and then didn't amount to anything, but after them our record looks good.

Besides Brett Berard I can only recall JT, Kreider, Ryan Bourque (right?), Step, Cally, Holly, Inman and Yorkie. I.e. most turned into really solid players with Inman being the only real disappointment. Maybe I am missing some real dissapointment?

For Canada our track record must be much more dubious. Dubé is the first I can recall, then of course Manny, Lundmark and Duke. I also think Pyatt played. I am sure I am missing someone.

I think you are missing Lafreniere lol

Its what happens when you never have first round picks, or even 2nd round picks, the players that play on Canada or end up playing are already picked by the time we get to the draft stage.

Doug Weight crushed it for the U.S. at the ‘91 WJC. Believe he still holds the single tournament points record for a U.S. player

Edit: meant to quote the U.S. post but quoted Canada instead oops

Laf should not be on this list. was not Rangers property at the time he played for Canada. lol

Explained it here

Agreed. If Laf counts then McDonagh should as well.

I only filtered on Rangers draft picks. EP premium filters are nice, but they aren't advanced enough to filter based on NHL team affiliation at the time of the tournament unfortunately

It’s insane to me how bad all of your takes are.
Come on. Have you not noticed, in all of the guises, how poor the takes are? My powers of detection say one of two things. 1) we are dealing with a 9 year old. or 2) a person who at this point just wants to try to rile people up.
