What better demonstration of his serve and volley credentials than that Cressy win a signifcant grasss court tournament which he does in Newport with a three set win ove Bublik, 7-6 in the third set.

Thiem's gradual comeback continues apace in Gstaad where he wins a breaker in the third to defeat Gaston, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6. Very entertaining match. What a backhand Dominic has.

What timing and, oh, the irony. The two players accused of match fixing meet in the first round in Hamburg and Karetsev wins 4 and love. In the second set Basisashvili took a grand total of three points.

I guess Serena learned from Wimbledon and is going to the Cdn Open and Cincy ahead of the US Open.

Kontaveit crushed Petkovic 6-0. Petkovic tweaked her groin in the 5th game and is getting a medical time out. That kind of injury is tough to deal with, probably not worth continuing this match.

And she retires down 2-0 in the second.

Not exactly match sharp himself, Berrettini in the semis brings Thiem's promising week to a close with a thud, 1 and 4 which should have been 1 and 2. Mateo returns without skipping a beat so far in Gstaad.

Carlos wins his semi over Molcan 6 and 1. Came out of watching this match with greater respect for Molcan. The first set was the most entertaining set of tennis I've seen this year.

Musetti and Alcaraz trade breaks to begin the match. Awful match-up for Musetti. The discrepancy in terms of technical soundness, footwork and quickness is obvious already.

1st set: Total opposite of what I anticipated. Carlos was uncharacteristically error prone, but that had a lot to do with the court placements, angles, spins, and change ups that Musetti was throwing at him which seemed to flummox Carlos sometimes. Musetti, 6-4

2nd set: Instant replay until the last possible moment. Musetti again breaks in the first game and serves for the match at 40-15 thanks partly to a blown double-bounce call. And then Alcaraz saves the match points, one with an incredible passing shot, then takes a nail-biting breaker, recoveriing from 3-6 and Musetti to serve, winning eventually 8-6. Sheesh.

3rd set: I expected Musetti to fold like a tent but he played some very clutch tennis, some of his best of the match, and broke Carlos at 5-4 on the sixth match point. Very exciting match.

Another one for the future. She had a nice run at the JR Wimbledon tournament aswell.

She's a great story. Hope she continues to rise.

No let down for Musetti after winning Hamburg In the first round of the Croatian Open, he beats Bedene 6-1 in the third set. I still think he is weak technically in just about everything and subject to breakdowns, but there is no denying his incredible touch, his ability to hit crazy angles, and his use of the entire court of his opponent. Fun player to watch.

Sinner/Alcaraz final tomorrow in Croatia but it was complicated. Sinner beat his qualifier Agamenone very easily but young Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri gave Alcaraz absolute fits before succumbing 6-3 in the third set. Zep came from two breaks down in the final set only to be severely hampered during the last three games by cramps. We're going to see a lot more of this guy.

Guessing Sinner in this one. Not sure about Carlos' ankle. Toss up, really.

Later: Ankle looks fine.

Early going 4- all. Sinner with maybe a slight edge but he is totally flummoxed by Carlos' kick serve to his backhand. Pretty big flaw to exploit. Tuck that away for key moments.

Goes to a breaker, natch. Carlos almost blows a 5-1 lead, But he is brilliant when it counts. Excellent set.

2nd set: Alcaraz's backhand inexplicably goes utterly off the boil, dragging down the rest of his game, too. Sinner, in trouble early, takes the last six games. Shocker. 6-1.

Sinner's coach has a face right out of a 15th century Renaissance religious painting.

3rd set: More of same. Carlos continues to struggle and Sinner keeps the pressure on, 6-1.

The first set had the quality of match among the Big Three. The final two sets are a reminder that even the best 19-year-old player in the world will still occasionally fall victim to inconsistency.

Venus and Marino is very early on, 1 all in the first. I'm shocked at how bad Williams' lateral movement is. She's been looking at her box from the first shot.

William's breaks and holds for 5-3. This is a painful match to watch.

These announcers are something else. They're acting like Venus is playing great. She's fine down the middle and has hit some big winners but any time she has to extend it's terrible.

Venus took the first set but Rebecca is now up a break in the second at 4-1.

Rebecca takes it 6-1. In her last service game, Venus had 3 foot faults! It's hawkeye and there was no replay.

A petition is circulating requesting that the US government allow Nole to play in the US Open The goal is 50,000 signatures which it looks like they will get. A fair number of Republican congressmen support the effort. Be interesting to see if this snowballs.

I can't imagine that giving a tennis player an exemption or changing the countries policies just for him would go over well.

Tbh I'm surprised Novak didn't get some random doctor in Serbia to just give him a vaccine certificate. I'll give him credit for that, he could easily do that, don't agree with his views on this but at least honest about it.
