Go ahead, risk the season for Eric Friggen Comrie, all so we can save someone who may be able to get a 5th or a 6th at the deadline.

If you think a 5th or a 6th round pick is worth missing the playoffs over, I'm not sure what to say
Adams has stated this is ANOTHER development season, they are NOT expected to win the Cup this season

Many people here forget this ....

I don’t know if anyone has brought it up but there is actually another short term solution to getting a roster spot. Both Asplund and Hinostroza can be sent on conditioning stints if they’d accept them. Buys you two weeks. By then they’ll both have sat long enough for that window to open

Adams has said he wants UPL to play (alot)

That isn't going to happen with a 3 headed goalie

UPL probably doesn't 'deserve' to get sent down, but he is the only goalie that is waiver eligible
His tune has probably changed now tho

not waiving Fitz, Asplund, or Hinostroza. Thsoe players will get you a 6th or a 7th. A small price to pay to keep UPL up

If Joker and Comrie come back a week from now we have to make two roster spaces. If they believe a player has trade value, now or in the future, they will not waive them and risk losing them for nothing. KA is very protective in this manner.

That said, the Sabres do not need to waive anyone.

1. Trade any of Hino, Olof, Asplund, Bryson, Fitz, Mitts etc in in some combination that concentrates talent into less roster players or returns picks/prospects.

2. Quinn, Peterka, Krebs, Sammy, Power and UPL can all be sent down without waivers. This is the most likely scenario IMO. They could just rotate these guys, including UPL giving him both NHL and AHL games.

I see no chance of Sammy or Power going down. I could see Quinn going back for a confidence stint with either Krebs or JJP, and then them trying to play Hino and Asplund into a trade. It's a business, and they won't throw away assets if they don't have to.
If no trades are made, I like the idea of paper transactions sending the rookies down while they continue to travel with the team.

The rest of January is a forced march. Moving young players on and off the roster strategically could give them needed breaks

gotcha. We don't even know whats going to happen yet, there will be ways to manipulate the roster to still get UPL starts both here and in Roch, I havent compared BUf/Roc schedules, but if they want to give Comrie/Andy a b2b, UPL can always ride down the thruway to get a start. They could waive Fitz, they could do a 'paper' transaction to send down Quinn/JJP to give em a night off when UPL comes back, injury could happen..who knows, I'm not too worried about and am fine with the many options, lets see how it plays out before the 'sky is falling.'

CapFriendly has UPL listed as an Emergency Loan transaction. I'm not sure if that is a real designation and if it is, does it affect their ability to keep him once Comrie is ready?

People that know more than me (a lot of you), does that designation really matter?

Yes and no. They can change it to a full recall assuming a roster spot is open.

You should know that even having a round or two of playoffs will do far more in developing these guys than will another year on the golf course
Agreed, but playing some playoff games isn't contingent of who is playing goal

Subban with 17 penalty minutes tonight with a "fight" against the opposing goaltender.

Also, his 6th win in a row.

Subban, UPL and Anderson are finding ways to win. I don't have that faith in Comrie.

I don't envy Adams having to make this decision. One thing is clear though -- you can't waive or trade Comrie right now no matter how you feel about him or UPL. Imagine they waive Comrie, he gets claimed, and then Andy or UPL get hurt (which is not at all unlikely given this team's recent history). Suddenly, you're relying on Subban in the middle of a playoff race. It would be especially bad if UPL got hurt because Anderson can only play around once a week, and the schedule gets pretty brutal the next few months.

Given how in the last 3 months, you've called Granato worse than both Nolan and Ralphus.....................AND how you called UPL an "ECHL caliber" goalie and how he was "worse than Dell"..............

I think Comrie can hack it.

UPL was worse than Dell in his first 5 games. He picked up his play big time. Stats re ugly, but he is making big saves at key times, which is what we have lacked even going back to Miller. Only time we consistently got a save when needed was Enroth's miracle run to the playoffs in 2011

I think is not what we need right now. We know UPL is able to hack it good enough to win. He's marching us straight into a playoff position at the moment

You risk losing a 6th or 7th round pick by sending Asplund, Fitz, or Hino down, if they are even worth a 6th or a 7th

They could send one of Peterka or Quinn down until the goalie situation is sorted out.
Not earning much icetime for some time now, JJ had 9 minutes last nicght, Quinn even less.

Those are also options as only Cozens is doing anything on that line

Be careful, every time I suggested this in the last week I have gotten hammered for it. Apparently, it is unthinkable and impossible.

Right now, If Comrie comes into the lineup I am sending Quinn to Rochester to work on some things and putting Hino in the lineup with Cozens and JJP. It's a simple short term solution until there is an injury or trade. If Joker is ready to come back later this week, then JJP or Krebs is going down as well. They are your waiver exempt rookies. This is part of their purpose. It's not like any of them are tearing it up in a "we cannot win without them" kind of way.

Would rather move Krebs up to the Cozens line. JJP is not producing at a level where we cannot send him back, though I'd rather we send Fitz, Asplund, or Hino back

The simple solution remains sending Luukkonen back down to continue working on his game. Rebound control and high glove are things we've seen that NHL teams have exploited. The next simplest solution would be to clutter up the practice net with three tenders and send someone like Fitzgerald down who seems like the least likely to be claimed (bad underlying defensive metrics, no advanced offensive game in his history at other levels). Everything after those two options is muddier.
