The players aren't banned, Hockey Canada has announced that it won't select those players until another investigation concludes. On one hand it's obviously stupid to not select some of the players who were not even in the area where the alleged assault happened, but it's also easiest to not bother selecting any of them for now. Publicly announcing it rather than just not selecting any of the players is quite a choice.

Good Lord.

If the players have been proven innocent because they weren't there, let them play. So much for innocent until proven guilty.

If I was a player from another year, I'd say, "Pffft. I'm not going".

I know so many Canadians who say they have lost their love for Canada. Myself included

Wow well at least there is some serious action taken. I think this method works for a couple of reasons. First off maybe it applies some pressure or at least accountability to the whole team as it's highly likely that even those not involved heard about stuff. Secondly it prevents HC from having such a player from being on the team and then getting called out for it (either being part of having knowledge of the event and not coming forward to protect a team mate).

Here is that roster... note that I'm not posting saying all 22 are guilty, just pointing out who is affected.

I like the move for the same reason mentioned above... might make a few bad apples think twice before doing this OR a captain might step in and say 'cut it out, we could all get banned'.

so Avs get bounced 1st round in 4 games then ask to play for Canada. Imagine how fast HC will reverse their ban on players.

I get why, but players have a clear cur alibi should be fine.

Now that I think of it I can only remember Mete not evening being in the country at the time I believe to be one that's in the clear and he isn't likely to get chosen

Tough break for Cale Makar, who appears to have been innocent. Hopefully this puts some pressure to get the guilty parties named.

MacKinnon, Byram, and Toews could play play but I would think they'd boycott in solidarity with their teammate.
Will they boycott for Nichushkin being banned too?

I doubt they'd boycott in either case, lest be accused by the chronically online of supporting the Russian invasion in Ukraine or the events that occurred with the junior hockey team in London.

So basically just Makar
For a "best on best" sure, but other guys would probably be World Championship roster contenders either now or in the future.

I think it’s crazy to ban the whole team just do they don’t have to answer any more questions leading up to the May event in May.

I’m pretty sure their investigations to this point would allow them to know would allow them to choose from 75-80 % of the team with great certainty that those players had no involvement.

They are cowards that want to protect a half a dozen players at the expense of all the players.

They don’t want to answer any questions like why was so and so not invited!

I would have liked to see Thomas and Kyru play with Armstrong being the GM of this years squad!

I doubt Victor Mete is making any team Canada anywhere in the near future but the fact he was in Jamaica and is temporarily banned for something that happened thousands of kilometres away is hilarious
I think this is why.

No one, to my knowedlge, has been found guilty yet.

So they let 5 or 6 guys play from the 2018 team at the World's, everyone starts doing the calculations and figuring out who is under suspicion.

Might create some internal pressure to get it done with.

I get putting pressure on the guys that were there, but if you are out of the country at the time as some were not sure their potential hear say should be used in any investigation.

^^ This. ^^

If they don't include a worthy player, people will believe the person did something wrong - even if they didn't.

Of course no one has been found guilty since no one has been charged. People have already done a good job of parsing the public statements, or lack of statements, and narrowing down a small group. And of course Formenton's very unique contract situation has obvious implications.

Anyway I do think that this is ridiculous barring at the very least players getting charged, which seems unlikely to me. Hockey Canada looking to avoid having to answer questions I dislike however, particularly as what did or did not happen is unknown.
