I’m much more interested in how Laf performs now that the monkey is off his back, he’s had 7 games to acclimate and the other members of his team seem to have found a pulse.
Comparisons in sports are natural, but most #1OAs finish their junior season in the summer, go to a full training camp, maybe Traverse city, play in 5-6 preseason games and then make their NHL debut. They’re maybe 3-4 months removed from meaningful games and had some exhibition games to get a taste of NHLers.
Not only did Laf not have a preseason acclimation, his last meaningful hockey was significantly longer ago. Add in Broadway expectations on a #1 pick and just the slight bit of being behind in timing and conditioning can get in your head and make things even harder. And at some point, not getting on the scoresheet for 3, 4, 5 games becomes a weight on the shoulders as well.
That’s all passed. He got on the board in grand fashion. He’s had the equivalent of a preseason to get acclimated. A baptism by fire really. All of that, and the relief of having scored, coupled with the rest of the team showing signs of life... I have little doubt the remainder of Laf’s season is at least on par with that of an “average” 1OA.
If he finishes with 25 points in 56 games I won’t be upset. But I’d be more surprised if he ended up under 25 than I will be if he ends up close to 40. I think - and I also believe that every NYR faithful, including Sam, Joe, Vally, etc. FELT it in the moment - that the goal last night was the breakthrough moment and the kid is HERE now.
Big things to come.
