I think with 2 natural LW in Kreider and Panarin with long contracts it was a mistake spending 1st overall on another natural LW. We needed a center we should have traded down to #2 and taken the best center and the Kings needed a LW pretty bad and were stacked at Center.

I can barely even read this board anymore, it's insane. Discussion is great, but there is just so much negativity around here lately. Some of us don't know just how good we got it.
I think that’s premature to say.

we have a core that could lead us to the promised land. and I mean a realistic shot. the thing is they’re extremely young and they need to develop. but most importantly they need to produce. points lead to goals. goals lead to wins. we cannot win without goals. until we start scoring goals we cannot win. until our young guys start producing we cannot call them great. moral victories only go so far. if your top pick ends up being an effective two way grinder without much offense, that is a failure of a pick. these guys have shown flashes of why they were picked where they were picked, but until they consistently put it together and score, you cannot call it a success. you cannot say we have it good.

this is frustrating. I see good things from kakko. I see good things from laf. but those good things aren’t enough.

I am not watching games I am boycotting until some good coach is hired. So all I know is 1 goal and 0 assists in first 12 games is beyond brutal for 1st overall pick. Something really is messed up. This is not some random 1st rounder this was the consensus 1st overall. Should have traded down to #2 and picked a Malkin-like center in Byfield.
If you boycott games do you promise to boycott posting too?

Were not winning. I wish Quinn could set him up better for his confidence. Put him on PP#1 and he’ll start putting up points no doubt about it. People need to realize a normal season there’s 6 pre season games. He could’ve played his fifth NHL game. I mean kids 19 you can see he has it in him.

Please please PLEASE get him away from Howden. If Panarin is actually out long term with whatever was bothering him would be a perfect place to put him with Strome and Kakko

Keep up. Sometime after the draft I said take it or leave it...Laffy will end up being the 3rd best player from the draft class. I got unanimous 'leave it' responses.
Screenshoting this will be fun to post for years

I posted this in the post game thread but I’m adding it here. Laf deserves our patience and I have no doubt he has elite skills and attributes that will serve him well. The main issue I see is he comes with far too many bad habits and is very soft. He’s got to be more of a forceful player at the NHL level. I think he will learn( much like Jack Hughes did last year) that talent is not enough at the NHL level. You’ve got to go to the spots on the ice that will give you a chance to score and if you don’t even try to get there you won’t be able to create offense like he used to be able to at lower levels. This mindset has to be driven into him.

In addition, he’s much to soft in the defensive zone and frequently plays the puck on his backhand. That’s a terrible habit that needs to be broken as well.

I’m confident we will see a much better player as this season goes on and certainly starting next season, once he can actually develop under a real NHL coach( hopefully!)

He cannot go to the AHL. CBA doesn't allow that.
This year he could if the Q hadn’t started up again. The cba negotiation was that any team that’s not currently playing due to COVID, those players if signed to an ahl contract or nhl contract can play in the ahl. Unfortunately rimoski is playing.

But the Q has started up again. So he can't. Like I said.

Lafreniere is bust sent him to us, we will give you proven veteran like elite fast skating offensive defenseman Marc Staal.(seriously what the f*** did you gave us)
What did we give you?

Payback for Brendan Smith...

Yep, he has to go to the heavy traffic area around the net and find space that great players do. I went and watched some goal highlight vids for other rookie 1st OA picks like Hall, RNH, Matthews, etc and as expected,, a vast majority of their goals were results of being in the right place at the right time to receive a pass. Also a lot of good positioning to put back rebound goals. Very little "highlight-reel" goals were scored in the clips I watched.

Frankly

I’m annoyed at the kid more than anyone else. He showed last night he isn’t overmatched like kakko was last year. He can skate and make plays at top speed. It’s there.

He’s not playing well. That’s why I’m annoyed. He’s playing like shit. He’s WAY better than this. Right now. Not talking two years from now. Right now he’s way too good to have one point. It’s absurd. Should Quinn have him on the PP to get him going. Yes. Should Quinn not be moving him to right wing two days into his rookie season. No he shouldn’t.

but lafreniere is a bonafide clear cut first overall pick. This is bullshit hockey from him. No need to coddle or worry about development. He should step in and produce.

That is all true but it’s also true that he’s not producing at the rate of other top picks that we hope he is like.

It can be explained, but it’s also concerning.
But, yet again, name one single top pick that has come into the league under remotely similar circumstances that Lafreniere has. There isn't one. Not even close. For ALL other top picks, they would only be a few games into the regular season at this point. If in the league at all.

And maybe remember that the kid will not be able to legally buy beer for two more years.
How bout Laine..mathews....etc...they scored before they were able to BUY beer. I dont think he has it to be honest. Kakko already isnt the scorer...lafren ??
