higher ceiling player and you can't teach size and center is more valuable position and always in demand.

You make is sound like Lafreniere is 5'10. He's 6-2" and 200lbs at 19... He'll be a mule in 2-3 years. Also, I don't think there are a ton of people that will agree with Byfield having the higher ceiling, hence why just about every scout had Laf at #1. He's also much more likely to actually reach that ceiling

Yeah guys the Professional Scout here would have picked Byfield over Laf.

The guys that actually watched them play last year would have been falling over themselves laughing their proverbial asses off.

Well all of them except the LA Kings, they would have been too busy sprinting faster than Ussain Bolt to the podium.

1.82 points per game in OHL is much better that Laf at about same age in QMJHL with 1.72 points per game.

and so far Laf has been disappointment in NHL. He was supposed to be super NHL ready (sounds like similar BS with Lias)

Hey Genius, it's about 10 games into his first season, with no preseason to help him get adjusted. Are you on crack?

Edit: If Laf went to the WJC like almost all his contemporaries he would have destroyed that tournament. I would rather have him playing where's he's playing both for his sake and the fact the US won the tourny. lol

It makes no sense why he did not go, would have been in better shape to start the season.

Have you seen any glimpse of 1st overall talent in his first 10 games?

He’s been up and around the lineup, playing with strome at his worst, Mika at his worst and now Howden who is a disaster in a top 9 role.

He needs Chytil to return worse than the team does.

FWIW, both Hughes and Kakko looked like trash last season. Hughes has 8 points in 9 games and Kakko has looked good this season and just had perhaps his best game as a NA pro. Even for the "phenon"-level players, it can take some time to adjust.

Especially when they don't get power play or are not leaned on to carry the offense out of the gate.

I am still very disappointed with Kakko even with his decent start, but in 2019 Kakko probably was the guy I wanted the most (although at the time I did not realize he has a disease and that he plays soft). In 2020 I was just wasn't really sure I wanted Laf over Byfield, smart thing would have been to trade down to #2 and draft Byfield and get something from the Kings.

Something to keep in mind with Hughes - while he has 8 points in 9 games, 2 of his 3 goals, and 3 of his 8 points, came in one game against the Rangers.

In total, 6 of his 8 points came in his first 3 games. In the following six, he has 1 goal and 1 assist.

Just curious, have you been following Byfield's journey so far this year?

In any case it is way too early to bring him up as an example of a successful 1st overall pick.

I think it's fine to have preferred Byfield. I don't think most would agree, but that doesn't make your opinion wrong. BUT, these first handful of games for Lafreniere in a really unusual season don't really prove anything one way or another, particularly when Byfield himself has yet to play a pro game.

Yeah, I see that pointed out on Twitter quite often. Still, he looks like a much more confident, mature player thus far. He's clearly improved and while I don't expect him to continue at a near-PPG pace over the full season, I do expect him to improve his numbers, as his overall game is better.

Not really different to me than Kakko, who also looks much improved, even though he hasn't had that "big game" like Hughes has from a numbers standpoint.

He's...been a bit less than dominant against his teenaged peers.

in OHL or in WJC? 7 games of WJC is even smaller sample size than Laf's 10 games. And 7 points in 7 games is decent and wasn't he one of the younger players in the tournament?
