He'd need three more years at least to hit 1000. He's probably fine just breaking the record. 40 is a difficult age to keep pushing past. One slightly down year or injury and it suddenly becomes four years needed to hit 1000. No guarantee he even hits 900 this year since he'd need to essentially go 1.8 goals a game.

No one in the league even has a chance of getting to 900 so he's safe for another generation at least. Then he'll be old/dead and won't care if someone breaks it. Matthews isn't even pacing for 40 this year and is still in his peak. It doesn't bode well for his longevity and he misses too many games every season. No one else is goalscoring at even close to that pace.

If he doesn’t break the goal scoring record this year, does he sign for cheap for the start of the season and terminate once he’s achieved it?
He has one more year on his deal after this season ends. He is speaking about what will happen when that deal expires for the 2026-27 season.

Notably as well, he will be 41 years old for the 2026-27 season. So it's not that crazy at that age he'd be content to do a farewell tour back home rather than try and squeeze every bit of NHL ability out of himself.

I’m curious if he goes the mutual termination route if he breaks the record this season, or stick it out for the last contracted season to add to his total

He’s basically just saying he’s retiring and moving back to Russia (based)

I’m doubtful he plays for Dynamo personally

I saw an interview with him this summer where he said it’s becoming increasingly hard and annoying for him to get to the pre season camp and work out to get into shape, so it seems that hockey life style has become not as enjoyable for him anymore, it’s actually incredible he’s playing this well nowadays

He said to Jamie McLennan and Jeff O’Neil that he wants to retire right after the goal

Literally taking off his equipment while celebrating on the ice and slowly making his way towards his car.
Obviously a joke. Dude wouldn’t quit on his teammates while they are contending for presidents trophy and a cup
