What a new and unique debate that hasn't been beaten to death.

Whether you vote for Crosby or Ovechkin depends entirely what you value in a player. The two players are extremely dissimilar.

I recognize Ovechkin's crown achievement will have a more noticeable impact on the record books, and he's been a joy to watch throughout his career. A generational player and the best (or in the same league as Bossy at least) goal scorer ever.

If I had to build a team from scratch, I would still take Crosby because I value all the elements he provided over his career, and he himself has proven to be a generational player in his own unique way.

Mike Bossy is not in the same league as Ovechkin as a goal scorer.

Ovechkin is awesome, and his longevity is absolutely amazing, but this is Crosby. The team success crosby has had internationally and NHL is really remarkable

Crosby has been the better player throughout their careers.

Ovechkin is obviously the greatest goal scorer of all time and that helps cement his legacy. I don’t really see a reasonable argument to rank him ahead of Crosby however.

This is very similar to the Bourque/Lidstrom debate.

Both legendary careers, but one player edges out the other by a narrow yet clear margin.

Ovechkin is still one of the greatest ever and shouldn’t be ranked too far behind Crosby.

Lidstrom is still one of the greatest ever and shouldn’t be ranked too far behind Bourque.

OV: GOAT goal scorer, better peak seasons, way bigger individual trophy case, physical, more "flashy" (especially during his peak)

Crosby: best playoff performer of the generation, more elite seasons, bigger team trophy case, better 2 way player, plays the more important position

I vote OV because I value peak seasons more but Crosby is great too. Both generational players who are top 10 all time imo. I do think 50 years from now though OV will be ranked ahead by most because of the legacy of his goal record, rockets, etc.

Has he? If we break it down by season

Better season (awards, goal/pt finishes, etc)--better player (played at a higher level while healthy)

05/06: OV--OV
06/07: Crosby--Crosby
07/08: OV--OV
08/09: OV--OV
09/10: OV--OV
10/11: OV--Crosby
11/12: OV--Crosby
12/13: Crosby--Crosby
13/14: Crosby--Crosby
14/15: OV--OV
15/16: Crosby--Crosby
16/17: Crosby--Crosby
17/18: OV--OV
18/19: Crosby--Crosby
19/20: OV--OV
20/21: Crosby--Crosby
21/22: OV--OV
22/23: OV--OV

Better season: 11-7 OV
Better player: 9-9

3 distinct "phases" of their careers. In their first 5 seasons, OV was better in 4/5 and I think the majority of Crosby fans will admit that. But then Crosby was better for the next 6/7 and most OV fans accept that. It's been a back and forth for the last 5 seasons though but I think most will agree that OV was better last season and so far this season.

If we look at Ovechkin and Crosby's career arcs, we can see three distinct periods:

1. 2006-2010 - Ovechkin and Crosby are basically equal in performance

2. 2011-2013 - Ovechkin's career dip, Crosby's productive but injury-laden seasons

3. 2014-present - Both players outside prime but adding career value

In the third period, we have the following:

Ovechkin
Crosby
Art Ross01
Rocket61
PPG Finishes9, 81, 1, 3, 2, 5
Hart Finishes21, 2, 2, 2

If we consider Ovechkin amassing Rockets to be of roughly equal value to Crosby with strong PPG and Hart finishes (YMMV), then ultimately you have to consider what Crosby's 2011-2013 period means to you. High pace with low games played.

Then, you can consider playoffs.

5 years ago I would of easily pocked Crosby over Ovie.
Today I pick Ovie over Crosby.
If Ovie goes on to break Gretzky's goal record he will be the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. Crosby has nothing like that in his resume.

While that's a cool feat, it's more like a novelty when you actually decide who you'd want on your team. Due to the fundaments of modern hockey, neither Crosby nor anyone else will have a chance to reach Gretzky's point totals.

The way I see it, career wise, Ovechkin scores more goals while Crosby makes your team score even more goals. The latter also plays a 200 feet game while Ovechkin has spent his career fishing for scoring opportunities.

Crosby

However Ovechkin's been better than Crosby this & last season so I wouldn't argue with people choosing Ovy.

Crosby is the better player. Without injuries this would not be all that much in debates.

OV had the higher peak though. But Sid was better throughout their careers.

I'd also take Crosby if we're comparing overall careers, but "Without injuries" can't be used as a caveat in his favour. Over 17 years, durability becomes as important a stat as goals and assists. "Without injuries" has become one of Ovechkin's greatest selling points.
