So the Calder Cup finals is happening

Game 1 went to double OT and this happened

Mixed opinions on this goal
I have zero clue of the rules in THe AHL
It was disallowed, and Abbotsford scored minutes later.

Watch every referee after the goal, they are as confused as everyone. It’s not waved off or announced a goal. Just pure confusion.

Holy crap! Even peewee refs always check with the defensive end goalie before dropping the puck. Of course this puck shouldn’t have been dropped. Asking if “it’s a goal” is ridiculous.

Are those the announcers for the team that scored?

Because the way they're talking is in direct contradiction with my understanding of the rules.

Which is that the linesman or ref checks and makes sure the goaltender is set before dropping the puck for a defensive end faceoff.

I didn’t watch the game.
I dont know if he was potentially in the ready position before this then turned to drink

If there was 4 second before this I would know better for sure

After the preceding save and whistle, Silovs took off his glove, blocker and mask, adjusted the mask strap, wiped away sweat, and then started to take a drink, all while turned toward the net. The faceoff linesman had no business blowing his whistle for the five-second warning when he did; it was pure obliviousness on his part. Ref in that end also clueless. The other linesman and the back ref saw what happened and correctly kiboshed the "goal."

The Charlotte announcers acting as though their team just got jobbed...

That’s on the C for Abbotsford. Don’t line up till your goalie is ready.

20% of people saying "yes' sort of proves that 80% of people will use their best judgement when answering a question and then... then there's the 20%. The only way the linesman could have botched this any more would have been if he'd just thrown the puck in the net himself.

Eh... I'll admit I've screwed up a couple times about that. Work a lot of games and you'll inevitably get a few occasions where you just have a complete brain fart about something stupid. But of one of the times I recall dropping the puck when the goalie wasn't ready, the specific occasion I have in my memory was in adult league, and they immediately started yelling about it. In which case, blow the whistle and start over after apologizing for the mistake (which did nothing to stop them from being mad at me, but oh well).

This is like when a teacher or professor feels the need to give their “expert opinion” despite not knowing the information and/or rule. Just say you’re unsure of the protocol and you’ll have to look into it. No one is judging you. “The sticks are down”. The issue has nothing to do with “sticks being down”.

Yup. Officials often blow their whistle immediately after puck drop because they want the restart to be fair. Clearly one of the two refs or other linesman should have immediately blown their whistle. It happens several times every game.

While fair, and something that I personally make a point of doing when I take a faceoff, at the same time the center isn’t wrong for following the referee’s direction.

One thing that’s not evident in the video is that prior to the faceoff, there’s typically a whistle to bring both teams to attention for the draw. Did that happen here? If so, it seems odd that nobody on Abbotsford said anything when the whistle blew while the goalie was still dealing with his equipment.
