NHL, NHLPA and IIHF think that IOC has handled the "Bäckström story" totally wrong, and it has, to a 100% chance, infected the already bad bands between the NHL and the IOC.
The IIHF stands on the same side as NHL and NHLPA, plus that Tommy Boustedt (Development Manager for Sweden) said this was all about politics - that the IOC wanted to show the world that they caught a "cheater".
As I said, it has infected the bands between hockey and the Olympics, but should both the IIHF and the NHL drop out from the Olympics and focus more on the World Championships? Maybe even the NHL should become a member of the IIHF?
If the NHL would become a member of the IIHF, of course they would like to have some requirements, maybe something like this?
What the IIHF would like to have from the NHL:
What everyone would earn on this:
My opinion is that the NHL only has something to win out of this

- NHL wants the money - The World Championship is played every second year in Europe, and every second year in North America, and the time it's played in North America, NHL and the national federation gets all the money.
- Either that the tournament is played in february with the requirements above, or that they move the tournament to September
What the IIHF would like to have from the NHL:
- Players can't be denied playing for their national team
- If something big comes up, the NHL would have to take a break from the regular season (for example, the World Championships)
What everyone would earn on this:
- Always having a best-on-best tournament
- Since there will be a best-on-best tournament every year, the attendance would raise a lot, which increases the amount of money for all the "winners" (NHL, IIHF and the national federation hosting)
- Rankings and such would have more importance
- The hockey market would expand, especially if the "lower nations" were allowed to use their NHL-players in the World Championships
- Example: If Lithuania would be able to use Danius Zubrus, or if Denmark, Norway, Belarus, Slovenia and Latvia were allowed to use their NHL-players, the interest would be even higher in those countries, which would lead to more people getting some knowledge about the NHL (since it's where they play), and perhaps even start following the league
- We would also see a bigger hockey community
My opinion is that the NHL only has something to win out of this
