Here’s the catch, we always assume and hope for the best after young players perform phenomenally. Look at Toffoli after he scored 31 goals and 58 points. He’s regressed since then and hasn’t come close to reproducing those numbers.
Tanner Pearson has had one season where he scored 20+ goals, and we all thought he’d improve on those numbers, after all, he was 24 when he enjoyed those career highs. He’s been a major disappointment since, so much so that they couldn’t even get anything of value back for him.
I don’t think there’s a straight forward projection for Kempe to ascend to, we’re already seeing that isn’t the case. So you’d have to understand why some expectations of his numbers are going to be quite tempered. I like Kempe when he’s physically engaged, that’s usually when he’s playing his best.
And for the record, despite not producing a single point in the post season, I thought Kempe was the best Kings forward in the Vegas series. I hope he shocks us and produces consistently and becomes a 50+ point scorer, but to expect that from him is being overly optimistic. Ask those who watched him regularly in the AHL. He was just as frustrating to watch there.
