With him being let go with the capitals he will be looking for a job and there's no question what he can do with the power play would he be a good addition to the kings coaching staff?

I think Oates can, I think DS and Oates would be a perfect dynamic.

I like this.

Was it a great PP or one that relied on one set play for a large chunk of their success? One that the Kings do not have the player to fill that role.

Seriously, I don't think much of this guy. After his act on the Jersey bench during the SCF with the Kings, then him calling out Ovi publicly, that just shows bad judgment. If he calls out Ovi privately, I think he retains his job.

It seemed like it was set plays, much like the way the NBA teams design plays. But you can't rely on a great pp to win games when you have a coach that is all offense and doesn't teach basic defense. You can go 3-3 on the pp, but still lose 4-3 because of poor defensive coverage, especially by the forwards.

Great minds think alike.

Can anyone, Oates included, :help: the Kings powerplay or is it just jinxed?

at this point i say NO

the ineffectiveness is almost entirely on the players failure to execute. what i do blame the coaches for is not using some guys in the correct role(s) and also for not keeping guys on a short leash for accountability.

being on a PP unit is something a player earns, it isn't something that is given to them based on salary. when players don't perform or meet expectations then the coaches need to try other guys. when players fall back into 'bad habits" then it is time for them to take a seat.

everyone (myself included) blamed Kompon for the PP woes years ago, only for the same results to continue. while ironically he moves to CHI and the PP there continues to click positively forward. this leaves one constant in the equation - the players. the players that are physically on the ice and the only ones that fix this.

this was funneling almost everything through Ovechkin on the off wing. with LA they would likely do the same with DD on the off wing like they currently do (and is the only place on the PP where he is effective). or it would be Carter, who i would prefer because he has a better shot and better accuracy than Doughty

What did he do during the 2012 SCF?

He was screaming like a banshee at the referees because linesman Pierre Racicot had the temerity to get in the way of a Jersey player trying to defend against Brown; moments later, Carter scored to make it 4-0.

I can understand DeBoer losing it over the non-call on Stoll and subsequent 5-minute major on Bernier leading to 3 goals in the first period (and he did lose it on the 2nd goal), but Racicot's mistake was accidental. Oates screaming like a stuck pig was over-the-top.

But how would you know that he didn't call out Ovi privately, before going public?

I like Oates. The problem is the management/ownership, supporting their non-disciplined superstar over their coach.

It is very hard to get rid of Ovechkin. Come on now. Maybe the owner thinks he can turn him into a two-way player. :propeller

Perhaps as a head coach he needs more seasoning but as a assistant he is great and for those who are talking about when he and the devils made the Stanley cup finals well that's tough no matter what you are from stick boy to gm it's a great accomplishment

I'd argue carter or gabs would be successful with this setup. It really drives me nuts seeing carter in front of the net or gabs on the half wall. Get these guys in a slot and let em rip. They both have amazing wristers that can score even at the top of the circles.
