This is true. My understanding is that being an athletic recruit (especially a high profile hockey recruit like Fox was) will give you an advantage in admissions, but that you still have to earn your way in (i.e. you can maybe be at the lower end of the distribution of all SAT scores across your class but you have to be roughly in range and likely still clear a minimum threshold).
You get different “ grants and scholarships “ that if you don’t pay back no one really comes looking. That how it was for my friend that played football at Harvard at least. Sorry I meant to respond to Kane’s post

I caught the end of something like he's one of 15 D-men to get 60+ points in his first 100 games or something like that? Can someone correct me on that?

I assume that Harvard is one of those teams that you can't make based on athletic skill alone.

You can make it on athletic skill alone you just can't get a scholarship and have to keep up a somewhat reasonable GPA. All the athletes get extra tutors and such if needed to help keep their grades up. Athletes can get in with grades far lesser than that of any regular applicant.

As far as I know Harvard isn't exactly difficult to get good grades in, some serious grade inflation going on there. MIT, it is not.

Of the 35 D-pairs that have played 300+ mins together, Fox-Lindgren have the best Expected Goals Against per 60 mins according to MoneyPuck.

Gorts got our top pair for not a whole lot in trades, gotta give him credit.

I'll be the first to admit I was on the "Don't trade assets for Fox, just wait to sign him" train but glad Gorts pulled the trigger. We definitely got a discount from Carolina (Two 2nds) because Fox had the leverage, but man what a steal.

All the props to Fox but let's not forget his partner. Just watch the way those two read each other. It's amazing. Lindgren knows he doesn't have over handle or make a bad pass up ice because he knows he can make the safer bet to Fox.
Lindgren is such a great compliment to Fox.

I thought the argument was always stupid. There's no guarantee that he would have signed here if we didn't trade for him.

There is a lot more than 15 Dmen who have gotten 60+ points in first 100 games. About double, at least.

The stat you probably heard is that he is now ranked 3rd all-time in assists among D in their first 100 games with the Rangers. Earlier in the game he tied Ruotsalainen

The lack of points will unfortunately preclude Fox from getting the votes he needs to win the Norris most seasons (kind of like Ryan Suter). He’s very gifted offensively but I don’t think he’ll break 55-60 in any one season. That’s enough to get you into the conversation but not enough to win. He’ll have to bank on the crazy influx of top flight offensive D all having somewhat subpar seasons to get a real chance.

He's pacing for 57 over a whole game season this year. On a better PP he would be ranking up the point.

Well said. Lindgren has been excellent in his own way. He plays with the grit that the team needs.

I don’t think he’ll reach Makar/Hughes level offensive output, but I think he’ll regularly be a 60+ point defenseman. He’s already pacing for that on a power play that has been crap. Fox doesn’t move the puck as well as ADA, but he’s the least of the PPs problems.

He paced 49 points as a rookie last year and is pacing 57 this year.

All signs point towards him sitting in that range.
