98 & 99 were World was NA.

Before that the game was conference and they were in opposite conferences.

there are still more than a handful of guys who are active that played against him though (jagr, hossa, thornton, marleau, chara, phillips, lecavalier)

Coincidentally, it seems like one gold, one silver and one bronze medalist are still active - Jagr, Gonchar and Timonen, respectively.

Actually, if you count the Swiss league, Christian Dubé is still technically active. His season ended just a few days ago and up until now he has not confirmed the rumors about his retirement.

He's played 6 games with the Rangers during the 98-99 season. So Malhotra is not the only one it seems.
