Abdelkader's hit (suspended 2 games)

As I said earlier, I think the inconsistencies with suspensions has made much of this a guessing game for fans and players. When injury and prior history also factor in, that opens up another grey area.

Tend to agree, and that's my complaint. There either needs to be consistency or there can't be any legitimacy to the Department of Player Safety.

Shanahan started out with a big push then had to dial it back. Honestly, he should have just kept firm and players wouldn't likely attempt a hit like Abdelkader did.

Whether or not you think that's good for the game seems to depend on how serious you feel the concussion problem is in the NHL. Having combed a lot of the literature on the topic, I tend to err on the side of caution with head injuries, and I'm okay with removing hits like the one Abby made if it means NHL players don't have brain damage for the rest of their lives.

Good job, Flashy; you just got rid of the silver lining of a Cleary re-signing. If that happens I'll think of you whenever he singlehandedly shuts down Datsyuk and Zetterberg, makes a Lidströmian breakout pass for the opposition or simply falls down with no one else around.

Thank you so very much.

who are you? I never see you post in the GDT. No hockey was way worse in the old days. This woulda been a 2 min minor in the 80s or 90s. So I guess Zetterberg and Babcock don't know anything about hockey when our own captain said it deserved a 2:00 penalty at best.

Wasn't aware that the NHL was going to follow the playground hoops code of calling your own fouls/infractions... what would you expect Z or Babs to say? That they'd have been pissed and looking for a suspension if someone laid that hit on E or Smith?

You are right, though, that the hit was 2:00 at worst in the 80's or 90's. But as more and more research is being done into the long term effects of brain trauma, I don't think the 80's and 90's should be used as a benchmark for allowable head contact.

I heard you needed a shooter...

Gotta love Cleary going Bono and wearing sunglasses indoors.

And it looks like he's ready to hit the beach and play some volleyball with Maverick and Goose. This photo has given Wings fans more joy than his play has over the last few seasons.

LOL, Really? So why would he care.

Im irked because I want Detroit to win the series vs anaheim. I know the sharks have little problem with detroit recently, but they struggle with the ducks for some reason. So when abdelkader pulls a bonehead play he risks San Jose's run in the playoffs too.

Now the ducks are going to win games 4 and 5, and its abdelkader's boneheaded fault. :(

I am pleasantly surprised :)

I don't know if you can call going airborn on the follow-through a "launch". The other player pretty much acts like a ramp and physics takes over at that point. It's like tectonic plates forming a mountain, the force is direct upward.

That being said, it is suspension-worthy in an "unlisted rule" sort of way. Being careless with your checks and injuring a player because of it, usually gets severely penalized regardless of intent. I think it's the case here. But they need to be clearer on the rules and just make it simple.

Maybe it's a bit wrong to bring it up, but I thought Anaheim's blueline was noticeably easier to play against with Lydman out of the lineup.

Also Datsyuk got Beauchemin out of his game by hitting him and avoiding the counter-hit. Smith goal bounced in from Beauchemin's shoulder. If their leading defenceman is showing signs of a mental collapse, our situation is looking pretty good.

A mental collapse...perhaps you are reading a bit too much into that :-)

Shanahan started with a pace that unsustainable. He was forced to dial it back for the good of the game.

Guys are going to push the envelope no matter what, when it comes to hitting.

Abdelkader's hit would have happened one way or the other. I don't think he intended to deliver a head shot. But when he realized he didn't line it up, he lunged.

A lot like Smith's suspension at the outset of last year

Wings played a lot better without Abdelkader in the top 6.
Just pointing out the obvious...

When Abdelkader returns, put him in for Emmerton

They really shouldn't have though. Samuelsson was pretty invisible and had his share of bad shots. I'm not much of an Abby defender, but at least the guy is good around the boards and can hit. Maybe Datsyuk and Z try too hard to get Abdelkader involved, and should just take it upon themselves like they did in Game 4.

Like I said, whether you feel it's for the good of the game or not depends on how you view the severity of the concussion problem.

It's always the way it works. Remember 2007 WCF when Pronger and Niedermeyer decided to run Homer into the glass and got suspended 1 game. Well we lost that game to the Ducks minus a suspended Pronger. Well now without Abby we win. Could have something to do with Lydman being out too.

Obviously you don't know Abdelkader. It's kinda a blessing in disguise to Babcock's stubbornness of trying to make Abby a top line player when he's not.

So, Lydman was supposed to retrieve the puck, and make a pass to one of his players, while also looking at Abdelkader?

Well if he's only 6 ft away like you suggested, why not? How hard of a pass is it?

Abdelkader can't keep plays going.
He's a play killer.

3 assists. What more proof do you need?

I can't believe I'm saying this but Abby has really come into his own he is one of the best on the team at getting into the dirty areas. I'm excited to see him back for game 6 and hope he makes a BIG impact. He's not the "scorer" that Babcock thinks he is but he's become a good all around player and has a good physical presence on the ice. I'm not worried about this hit other than I hope it doesn't affect his physical play. He's not known as a dirty player so I think this was a freak thing.
