Series Talk: [A1] Toronto Maple Leafs vs [WC1] Ottawa Senators | Part II (TOR lead 3-1)

A few thoughts after Game 3. Laugh if you must.

-This is 100% a different Leafs team. Anyone who doesn't see it is either just a blind hater or doesn't watch a lot of hockey. They are playing the exact type of “playoff hockey” that they were ridiculed for not playing in previous years. Limiting scoring chances, playing sound defensive hockey, Core 4 showing up and getting great goaltending (a couple of goals nothwithstanding). They've got a system, and they're executing. And winning the division has its perks (no offense, Ottawa.)

-I think the Sens are getting too much hate. I actually think they’re playing the Leafs hard, but they’re inexperienced and their goaltending is horrid. They've taken two games to OT, so they're not getting their asses handed to them. Their goaltending is horrid. Ullmark is Skinner-esque bad right now. If the Sens lose this series, which is all but certain now, they’ll learn from it and get better. They are going to be a pain in the ass to play for many years.

-Can the Leafs beat Florida or Tampa? Maybe, maybe not, but one thing is certain: if it’s the Panthers, they are going to be playing a much different team than they did two years ago. I think Leafs vs Cats would be a f***ing war. Can't lie.

Let’s finish the job here and then worry about Round 2 when it happens.

Who would you say is the Leafs MVP for this series?

(And yes, Ullmark would be a funny answer but I already claimed it)

Honestly everyone has done their job. It's been a complete team effort. Depth stepping up, big boys producing, goalie making saves special teams doing well, defense blocking tons of shots

Great question, the fact that a handful of names come to mind is a pretty good indication that so far this has been a balanced effort.

Matthews has played VERY well and has five points in 3 games.

However Marner has played just as well and has six points.

Stolarz with a sub 2 GAA and a .926 SVPCT with some big stops at key times would be a safe choice.

Even Benoit with a GWG, a GWA and some very solid play would get votes.

So would Berube. Or PP coach Savard

Didn't mention the three guys at a PPG or higher.

I think I vote Stolarz. He has set the tone for the Leafs to calmly and confidently play their game

We keep hearing about Florida this and that. Yes, they're one of the strongest teams in the league, but you don't win the division by being a pushover. It could be an interesting series.

They've had easy teams before - they've just f***ed it up royally. Columbus was every bit of an easy matchup as we're seeing with Ottawa too but our core players just straight up didn't show up in that series.
The way the Leafs and Jackets having identical records going into the Bubble has been memoryholed is hilarious to me. They were the eighth and ninth seeds, with Toronto getting the higher seed by virtue of RW tiebreaker Why do Leafs fans insist on pretending it was a 1 seed/16th seed matchup on par with the Jackets and Tampa the year before?

Tough one. Stolarz has been strong and I don't think many people had Benny being at OT hero.

I think it's Marner, tbh. The stats are one thing, but he does so many little things that often get overlooked, especially on the PK.

Funny - we've been on the side of "but we won the 5v5 play, only goaltending was the difference" so many times before. Now, we're on the opposite side of it, and you can really see just how meaningless those talking points were.

It's more of a team thing I think. I couldn't really name an individual player.

It looks like the guys have bought into Berube's team before individual approach. Everyone seems to be doing their job so far, with everyone chipping in, and some unlikely heroes along the way.

This thread makes no sense 😆🤣😆

Everyone talking about how good the leafs are and hour different they are this year, then evened laughing at how pathetic the sens are ans how much more of a fight the jackets would of out up yet the series has been went to overtime twice out of 3 games???
