Series Talk: [A1] Toronto Maple Leafs vs [WC1] Ottawa Senators | Part II (TOR lead 3-1)

Good first game for the Leafs. The ice was tilted most of the night, which resulted in the calls they got (plus some really poor discipline from a few Sens). Disagree with the 5 on 5 comment, Leafs looked pretty good in that regard too, despite what the shot totals were saying. Stolarz was solid despite some questionable rebound control. 4th line for the Leafs led by Laughton was solid for them tonight.

Ottawa will learn from this and get better. I am sure they will emphasize playing more disciplined hockey as the Leafs were all business in this one. Still a long way to go, but the Leafs are very comfortable playing low scoring 5-on-5 games.

Sens will be much better in Game 2. If they actually stop being undisciplined assholes and lay off the cross checks, they actually match up quite well.

He thinks calls are consistent game to game lol. Sens fans are in for a rude awakening. It will be different refs who will have different standards game 2. Frustrating thing about the playoffs.

Sens players are better off burning the tape and not expecting them to get the calls

Outside of penalty on Tanev, every other penalty Ottawa took would had be pretty easily call by any ref.

Ottawa tried to do the same thing Florida team did but they're a difference between playing a smart physical game and just be undisciplined

Well disagreed. According to Natural Statrick, high danger chances were 13 vs 10 for Toronto, expected goals were 3.55 vs 3.39 for Ottawa. But then, 5v5: high danger chances were 6 vs 5 for Ottawa, expected goals 2.47 vs 1.34 for Ottawa.

So yeah, Ottawa controlled 5v5, but their goaltending was brutal and they also sucked on the PK.

Until 4-1 goal leafs was in control and slow down with 3 goal lead

I'd expect Ottawa to get some makeup calls in game 3 but they showed their inexperience last night.
They will make adjustments but they had some good things going, crashing the net and at least testing Stolarz.

Leafs did well with game management once up 4-1 and executed on the PP.
Stolarz had a few highlight saves but his rebound control was a little odd, I remember his chest being like velcro in Florida, maybe just nerves.

Definitely has the makings of a rivalry for next few years. Ottawa needs next one or it may be over in 5 but still have a feeling it's going 6 games.

Laughing that there are so many Sens fans angry at the officials. Maybe Ottawa should focus on hitting properly, and playing the right way physically instead of attempting to injure guys.

Some WEAK calls in that game, but Sens need to be better in a number of areas. They're inexperience showed and the Leafs did a good job capitalizing. Even Marner showed up on a breakaway, probably the most surprising thing of the whole game.

Ullmark needs to be A LOT better as well. C'mon Sens.

I can't agree with the 5v5 talk. It's cope to me. After the first 2 periods the shot chart 5v5 showed a clear picture. The Sens outchanced the Leafs but all of it was from low danger areas. Leafs kept them outside almost the whole game.

It wasn't until the 3rd they were really pushing and the Leafs were defending a multi goal lead they evened up the high danger chances but at that point of the game, the Leafs were just holding their structure and defending the lead and not pushing much anymore.

Once again, Leaf fans are asking non fans to understand we have been outshot and "out chanced" most games this year. But the underlying numbers show the high danger chances are in our favor.
If the Leafs keep getting out chanced vs the Send in 5-on-5 they better throw a parade for winning this series.

They would get worked by Florida or TB.

Interesting that the Sens apparently have the ability to be better but the Leafs don't moving forward in this series.
If anyone took a step back and looked at this match-up objectively, there wouldn't be much to talk about. It is a mismatch in a lot of areas, most importantly goaltending, special teams and timely scoring. It will be surprising if it goes past 5 games.

1 for Batherson's cross check. Batherson's trip and Nylander's hook already balance and a high stick is a high stick.

The first three - You don't get even up calls for blatant stupidity.
I’d imagine the refs will review the footage and see OEL and Matthews dives. Even if it’s different refs, they don’t like to be shown up like that and the Leafs will probably have a hard time getting those calls after.
