I think it's time to have a conversation about Darnell Nurse.
Since people (including myself) are allowed to endlessly shit on him when he's struggling, it's only fair to praise him when he's playing well and after a rough start to the season with an endless rotation of bottom pairing D flanking him, he's been arguably the Oilers best Dman along with Kulak. 3 goals, 10 points only one on the PP and very little McDrai time at even strength and a +2 with solid defense playing almost 21 minutes a night (without much PP time). He also looks happier in general so it deserves to be noted that he's been playing very well and looking like the Nurse we saw a few years ago.
Been really dynamic, confident, jumping into plays and ripping shots. Its interesting that when Nurse is feeling it he seems more engaged, happy, and finding more of a role. I shouldn't, and maybe not the place but I'm wondering if he has up and down mood swings. Seems like he gets down, and when up, very up. Could be hard for him to regulate the emotions. I dunno, just been wondering.

Rangers better pay Shesterkin whatever he wants because they’re a mediocre team that’s getting bailed by elite goaltending.
Just abysmal team play. The rangers seem only interested in personal scoring stats. That was the worst team game and coverage I've seen since the Pittsburgh game. Only thing I could thing is this being a display of what actual non coverage looks like. People would be ripping the Oilers defensive play all day if they played anythng like this and still do. Hopefully games like this serve as reckoning that Oilers D play and coverage is generally better than some think. It should reduce some of the "Oilers are awful defensively" comments we see here. The Rangers are awful in system play. Repuslive. Makes for entertaining hockey though, I have to say. never a boring game with the Rangers in town.

Good win. When this team skates, they are a very tough out and that’s many picked them for the cup. Stu Skinner had a decent game. But that is the problem. He could and will likely turn around and give you garbage the next 5. That’s why his numbers continue to suck as a starter because he isn’t one.

A bit severe in the analyses (in agreement with so many here) but sound in your conclusion.
What do you propose to do about it if anything?

Holy overreaction. The Rangers had a bad game, last game of a road trip. It happens.

It also drives home the point of how bad are goaltending is. We would be at the top of the league with our system play and average goaltending.

When the team is allowed to do anything they want pretty much unimpeded they look like this. Unfortunately the measuring stick, ultimately, that we will have to compete with is how the Knights, Stars, Jets, Wild play. Rangers seem just like an easy out for us. That club figures they are talented enough to just open it up against us and they always learn different. Actually they don't learn. About the only good defensive play the Rangers made last night was the Panarin hip check on Drai. They play like fancy boys that are NEVER contenders.

Using this game as a cup yardstick is probably off as Rangers are never around that. Teams with tighter games will inevitably always beat them.

They were bad yesterday though. The Rags D play was horrible. You both can be right on that account.
Rangers were awful last night no question, they never showed up. Strange too as I figured they wanted to get some points out of Alberta after losing to Calgary the other night. Quick was great in the first but McDrai were flying last night. Great game for the Oil.

Both things can be true Stoneman89
For the record, I agree with you - I think he's cooked as well. My hope is that Philp can come in and do that job. When he had his cup of coffee he looked pretty good at the beginning but then faded. Hopefully when he comes up again, he proves he can stick.

He has young kids, that could have played a part and it might be what's effecting Nuge now. Fatherhood, first timers especially, can be hard on some guys in terms of physical and mental adjustment. Just a thought...

I don’t see that wording in the OPs post. I think you’re trying to pick a fight.

Oh well, that’s on you.
Not at all.

"The Rangers are awful in system play. Repuslive. " Yup, so awful that they are consistently near the top of the standings nearly every year and went to the east final last year.

Comments like that I would look at as a generalization. The poster in question has a history of tending to make outrageous statements now and then. Not sure if it's be contrarian or to get a rise out of people.

That’s unlikely given how bad the offense has been. Way, way too many,0,1 and 2 goal games to expect to win regularly with even above average tending. Would’ve made a difference but not the only issue this team has had, far, far from it.

It misses Evander Kane. He’s always anchored that unit in the little time they see.

Gotta give a shoutout to Darnell. He played reallly strong in his return. People rag on him but he’s playing good this year and we really misssed him when he was out.
He's still overpaid, but when he plays like he has for most of this year, it's much more palatable to say he's only overpaid by about 2 mil a year, as opposed to the playoffs last year, when he looked like he was overpaid by 7 mil a year...

This version of Darnell is what the team needs consistently, and I don't think he'd take nearly the amount of shit if he kept it up consistently. I like Nurse, and I really, truly hope he can keep up this level of play all season and, more importantly, into the playoffs.

It is largely Ceci and I was saying it for the longest time. I still laugh that posters actually tried to convince themselves that losing Ceci was a detriment to this team. Worst puck retrieval and worst controlled zone exits D on this team last year. I'm still baffled at what exactly we were losing aside from a big body in front of the net that could box guys out, but would often miss his assignment on the high danger opponent.
Couldn't agree more re: the puck retrievals and zone exits. He was not just bottom of the Oilers, but amongst the bottom 5 dmen in the whole league in those stats if I am remembering it right. For a team that really needs to get and retain the puck that type of player is a big liability.
