Was posting on the Canes boards when I became curious about the following question. The phraseology is Canes-related, but really the question applies to the entire NHL/AHL relationship.

Dumb question: who pays for AHL salary? I assume the Canes would pay for any one-way deals that got buried (e.g. like we’re discussing with Darling).

Does Charlotte pay for two-way deals when the player is in Charlotte? What about AHL one-way deals (Schilkey, etc.)?

I know the teams are likely financially intermingled in some way - but at the same time the Checkers do have an owner so I’m sure they have a separate operating budget. Not sure how that all works.

I’m interested in any insight as to how NHL and AHL teams’ operating budgets intermingle. Anyone know?

Depends on affiliation agreement.

If a NHL organization owns their AHL affiliate, we know who's paying the salary.

If it's an independent AHL affiliate, who pays the AHL salary (of two way players) and how one way salaries are paid (if proportioned) would be defined in the affiliation agreement.

The Milwaukee Admirals pay a fixed amount to Nashville, who supplies most of the players and pays the salaries, so I have been told. The Ads will sign 2 or 3 players to AHL only contracts. Typically, that is a forward, a Dman and the third goalie so they can fill in holes in the line up for injuries and call ups.

My understanding is if AHL club is independent then the NHL team would pay NHL contracts (including AHL salaries for those players on two-way deals) and the AHL club will pay for AHL only contracts, as when affiliations change, the AHL team keeps the guys on AHL only contracts.

Each team contract is different with their farm team. Some teams have 100% control of their farm team while others have a 50 50 partnership where the AHL team has some control over what they do. This one reason some clubs change affiliates is because they want more control of the development of the players on the farm
