A question for some European fans

Hey guys,

First I want to say damn you guys are incredibly dedicated. I don't know how you do it throughout the season.

Ok so I missed the first round of the playoffs a couple years ago when I went to Spain. In a couple weeks I'm going to France and I really don't want to miss the first SCF since 94 if we are in it. On an iPad, I typically am able to watch using the NBC app or the optimum app, but I'm pretty sure those won't work in France. So my question is how do you watch games and what do you suggest I do?

I would also appreciate any information as I'll be moving to London next week. I assume I can use streams on my laptop, but ideally I'd like to watch the games on my TV. Do any of you that live in England know if it's possible to watch the game on live cable? Thanks in advance :)
 
Yeah, I end up with a lot of sleepy mornings at work. Worth it tho!

I would start by checking out who has the TV rights in France. If you're lucky, it might be a basic television channel available in your hotel room. The channel might have an app or a website where you can buy PPW if it isn't shown on free channels.

Any of these two options would probably, given this is France and they aren't exactly excited about english, leave you with a french commentator.

Perhaps one of the betting sites (not naming any as I'm unsure if it's legal) will stream it? Might need to register an account for that.

The easiest option would be to find a pirate stream.
 
the streams in the OP of the GDT work just fine. Honestly, I'd be surprised if French television was airing it. Good luck!

As for the UK, I think there's someone broadcasting it. May be Pay TV, though. At least much of the Philly series was blacked out when I was in London in April.
 
Think NHL.com let u pay to see matches online?
I pay for a sports pack that shows NHL on the telly, if not I find some random stream online (usually streamo)

Got to admit that watching a 0-1 loss until 5-6 in the morning isnt a great pleasure when I start work 2 hours later..

I used to subscribe to NHLonline (i think it was), but they lost the rights some years back.

Now i mostly use Streamo (its listed in the op of every game thread), or, if that stream is overloaded or down, i try Charlie's stream.

There are also other streaming options usually listed in the OP, but be a bit careful as most of them are chock full of all manner of adware crap and straight up viruses.

I'd recommend to use a browser with ad block, etc (personally i use Firefox with Ad Block and No Script).
 
I use the links in the GDT. Of which i am extremely gratefully.

I think in the UK Premier Sports broadcast NHL games but i don't think you get a choice of which games. It wouldn't be any good for just following your team.

I live in England and I have nhl gamecenter however if it's blacked out its because it on premier sports witch u can also get for £12 a month online or u can get it for £10 a month through sky tv don't quote me on exact prices but it's roughly that

Yo I have an account on Live NHL Gamecenter and that is simply awesome to me. In France you must look for a stream, but in London FOX is broadcasting it, just find a sportsbar and ask them to put it on for you.
 
The streams usually posted in the GDT should be your easiest solution. I don't think they work on an iPad, but just hook your computer to a TV and should be good to go. That's what I have done for the last couple of years. Before that I just watched on my computer screen.

I can only speak for Norway and Sweden, but here it's Viasat who has the rights to NHL. They show games every night on their subscription sports channels and they stream every singel NHL game on their online subscription service Viaplay, which is the choice have have gone with.
 
A couple of things to add. By experienc a lot of hotels in France have terrible internet. You may have to find a low quality stream, or get GCL which I believe is blackout free in France and broadcasts at a range of qualities.
Consider getting a french sim card and buy a big data pack. Make sure the supplier allows network sharing (unless you get a sim for your ipad). I think thr supplier called Le French Mobile should work, but there are other options too.

Bring a laptop as well if you have to rely on free streams. Most of them might not work on the ipad.

In London you'll need streams. GCL will be blacked out and sports bars close early so you'll only be able to watch afternoon games there. Also internet access in the hotel can cost as much as $35/24hrs over there. "The Cloud' is free and available all over greater London, though you may have to look around a bit for a decent signal.i

You might want to look for free altrrnatives.

How old are you OP?

I lived in Paris and there was a nice handful of sports bars showing NHL games. Though I usually just watched streams from streamo. Worked fine.

You can get it on cable premium packages i think, but that'll set you back some (it isn't called "rip-off Britain" for nothing). Your best bet for watching on TV would be stream to your laptop then play it through your TV with chromecast or something. I don't know much about such things but I'm sure it's doable.

Regarding London, I'm not sure about how it'd fit with opening hours and such but just on the edge of Covent Garden there is a Canadian ex-pat pub called the maple leaf (very original) that'll obviously show hockey and an american sports bar named Riley's sports bar on Haymarket. Their website doesn't say they show hockey, but I'm sure they'd be willing...????? maybe. Both of these places are super central.

While more or less true, the area it covers is pretty small (definitely not "Greater London", which is pretty much everything inside the m25) and I struggle to believe it has enough oomph to stream HD, or anything remotely close.
 
Well,

Here's my 2 cents.

For years, I used online streams. Luckily, Loffen posts these in the GDT's. Especially Streamo works quite well. It's not HD quality but it might be your best option since most hotels don't support a high enough bandwith to watch HD streams.

I have used hockeystreams.com since this season. It's very, very much worth the money. HD streams with several broadcasts. Reg. season games have home feed, away feed, Canadian feed and sometimes national feed. Not sure if it's completely legal, but for me it's like heaven, since it also has AHL, OHL, WHL, QMJHL, KHL and international games.

In the play-offs, it's NBC and CBC and sometimes TSN or RDS. having the option to try different channels has taught me that NBC indeed messes with the crowd noise. CBC is your best option if MSG is not available (like in the play offs). I hook up my laptop to my tv with an HDMI cable, and from there on I feel like I'm watching like one of you guys. With of course the big difference that it's 1 AM or 2 AM when the puck drops for us.

Unless you travel to Scandinavia, chances of finding a proper broadcast through the normal ways (tv for instance) are very limited.

Personally I watch all games through gamecenter. I take pleasure in switching to another teams broadcast when the Rangers score. The streams posted in the GDT also works perfectly fine.

Your main enemy will be knowing that once the game ends at 4-5am, you'll spend at least 30 minutes reading the PGT

Streamo for laptop/windows, and Charlie's for iPad/IOS. The latter has the best quality IMO.
 
NHL network, and if its on blackout I use one of the OPs streams, most recently streamo which often works perfectly.

20 just going with family for a week, I'm guessing it will be around games 6 or 7 of the next round, although it may be earlier if this round ends in 5 for both rangers and kings. I saw canal sports carries the rights, idk if a hotel would have that or not.
 
Thanks guys for all the responses, seems like streamo is the best option if the game isn't televised. Just gotta wake up early and pay for wifi should only be 1 or 2 games max, but if that ends with Hank and Marty hoisting the cup it would absolutely be worth it :D
