How is it statically possible to have that many break through cases?
it's statistically likely since no one on the team had it last year and the vaccine isn't particularly strong. this was locked in from the moment sully started bragging that no one had it last year. everyone will get it eventually, and the pens were california brush waiting to get lit

Pretty common, actually. The difference is that the general public isn't being tested while NHL players are being tested frequently. So what the general public might brush off as symptoms of something else and is choosing not to get tested, the NHL players are finding out that their fatigue and cold symptoms are COVID - just less severe symptoms than if they didn't have the vaccine.

They're also in a situation where they are in close proximity to people in an enclosed space. Not sure what the mask policy is in the locker room or weight room, for example, but it's possible it's spreading there.

Or from family members. Bunch of these guys have kids, and until last night kids under 12 couldn't get the vaccine.

Let me tell you the difference between Vaccination and Immunization. There is no such thing as a "break through" when you are vaccinated, because you can still get it just not as sever as if you were not vaccinated. Break through cases can only happen if you are Immunized, because immunization stops you from actually contracting the virus/disease.

I think maybe I'm already out of energy for this season.

This team f***ing drains you, man.
It's just boring and predictable hockey. We're doing what the Habs did in the playoffs, but without Price or anybody close to as exciting as Suzuki or Caufield.

Would be cool if our two top wingers weren't playing like they're being inconvenienced by having to play hockey instead of golfing or fishing.

NHL players have a higher level of exposure than the average person too between all the travel and contact they're having.

And also most of the studies that have been done are on symptomatic infection. We know what the rate of protection is against that with recently vaccinated individuals and it's pretty good, but there's not a lot of studies on what the level is of asymptomatic infections, and that's because most people who catch an asymptomatic case don't get tested.

Depending on when some players have gotten vaccinated they will have varying levels of protection as well. Studies have shown that the level of protection against symptomatic infection wanes over time. Boosters seem to refresh it, but I dunno how many NHL players have gotten boosted versus how many got a 2 shot regimen and when they got it. If Crosby got his shots months ago and John Marino got his 2nd shot just before the season started (for example) then Marino would expect to have higher protection against symptomatic infection than Crosby.

Between the injuries and all these Covid cases, I'm getting to the point of "who cares" whenever I see the Pens have a game.

As much fun as it was seeing them overachieve early in the season with so many guys out, the appeal of watching a bare-bones roster every night is wearing out.

It's hard not to think it was just adrenaline and not having the joy beaten out of them yet.

It was already said once today but if this team is gonna lose I wish it at least wasn't such a f***ing bore to witness.

The Burgh
most teams already dealt with this last year

And this year, nobody is going to get games postponed because they have a couple of COVID cases -- they're just going to have to take the ice with a depleted squad and take their lumps. Last year... if Backstrom & Kuznetsov have the flu then the NHL gives the Caps a week or two off so they don't lose too much with them out. This year, big deal if Letang & Crosby, etc. are out -- NHL says "game on!".

Even with a reasonably full and healthy team, tomorrow's game was (and still is) going to be the first one this season where the Pens are likely to get the shit beat out of them -- on the ice, if not the scoreboard. The first 8 games didn't feature the opposition running around trying to generate injuries very much.

I wish all games were afternoon games this season so we could just get it out of the way. I'm stoked to watch E-Rod miss the net or chest snipe a dozen times all night, and still end up massively outplaying Jake and Kap.

I know we're dealing with a lot of adversity right now, but please consider that flaunting your negativity relentlessly will discourage people from coming to these boards now and in the future. I'm feeling that way myself today.

So if you're one of those people, please think about that before hammering away that the season is over before game #9 of 82, in a league built for and famed for its parity. Please rely more on your memory of past seasons before typing.
