You're right but that how many of us sports fan works. :)

Oh please lol first of all your comments about sitting on the couching drinking beer is funny, speak for yourself on that one lol Some of us are in great shape and play competitive sports. Secondly i agree that some fans act way too cocky in a game they had no part in. And Thirdly i strongly disagree you implying Canada should be given no credit for a good game lol lol lol I already said Russia played a good game and hard game and deserve credit. But give your head a shake implying that Canada deserves no credit for playing a good solid game lol oops sorry, this response was meant for Sensisnitis

Scary to notice the amount of grown men acting cocky in regards to a hockey gamw in which they had no part in. "We" won? "Onto the next one"? You're on your couch drinking your beer. Might feel good to believe that youre part of something bigger than yourself, but its time to realize that its not real.

The only thing anyone should be doing is giving credit to the Russians. They had half the talent but some of their players stepped up and made it a close game until nearly half of the third.
I dont think the SOG are as telling as they seem, Russians played a great game overall. Its a tough task keeping up with a deeply stacked roster like Canada's.

A game in which they had no part in? Of course we had no part in it; I think that part is well known. We are all on a hockey board and are specifically discussing international hockey, which many fans cheer for their favorite national team. In particular, is there any specific reason you feel it is OK to use the term "we" when for cheering for club teams ("believing one is part of something bigger than yourself") and not national teams, which apparently is "not real" ?

I ask because:

Game. Set. Match.

Cheering for a team doesn't require any rational explanation. We all have emotional bonds to our favourite teams for different reasons... I think it's fantastic if people are able to be genuinely happy when "their" team wins. Also these games wouldn't even exist without us fans.

No need to be a cynical ***hole about this.

Okay, I'll take the L. Perhaps I chose my words poorly. My comment was meant to be directed towards the comments that expressed unnecessary cockiness, not to mention lack of honour.

Nowhere did I imply that Canada did not deserve any credit, please read, and the beer on a couch phrase is a metaphor, not implying that youre all out of shape, lol.

Youre right though, I was wrong on certain points, my bad.

Beavers aren't exclusive to Canada.

Eagles aren't exclusive to the USA either.
The beaver is a longstanding Canadian emblem because the trade in beaver pelts fuelled the exploration of the Canadian interior. And they're clever, hardworking little critters.

And they'll "bite your ****ing leg off", as the drunk lady eloquently put it to a 10yr old me, when a beaver wandered into downtown in our small town :) .

I know the tournament is not ever yet but if I were Canadian I'd be worried about the state of the game of hockey. To be the best at the game you create and that you are pretty much the only ones to actually play is pretty disturbing. Some other countries do have some good players, but this game is played so much more in Canada that it doesn't make much sense to have any international tournaments. Some countries such as the Czech Republic don't even produce top end players anymore, to some etent the same can be said about other countries, for instance Russia, which stopped producing defensemen 10 years ago. What's left? Canada A vs. Canada B. The NHL should look into it for the next World Cup. Or let each province ice its own team and add Russia and Sweden to the mix.

This is rich.

Time and time again, European fans maintain that, given our stupendous advantages in registered players and number of rinks, Canada should be dominating international hockey, and that not winning every tournament amounts to failure.

And now that Canada is actually doing this, it's bad for the game.

For the record, I think Russia had a solid showing at this tournament.

Yep. It's not that Canada has to intentionally slow down, so that the others catch up. It's up to other nations to make strides to improve hockey development.

Having said that, I do think that it would be more fair to host the World Cup outside of North America as well (if NHL stops participating in the Olympics). But I doubt that the NHL would ever entertain this idea.

I don't see any contradiction here?

Unless they intend on having nhl teams in Europe, I don't see how it makes sense to have it outside of North America. Especially so close to the start of the NHL season.

Yes, it doesn't make financial sense for the league to do this, and I wouldn't blame it. But if the league dumps the Olympics, it would be unfair for the only best-on-best tournament to be held in North America. But this is what we would have to live with.

It is also unfair that the only world championships that are official are held at a time that hinders north american fans and teams from really showing there best. While also never hosting it in a north american country.

Well to be fair there is pretty much no demand for the tournament over here.

Put your season at the same dates as everyone else and the problem is solved.

The nhl is the 1st and biggest pro hockey organization in the world. Why should they bow down to nothing leagues?

Add: another thing, the nhl has more teams, which means more games, which means longer seasons. Which means just starting 2 weeks earlier like say the khl does would not be enough. The nhl would litterally be starting training camps and pre season games in late july or early august. Just so the end of the playoffs could be over just in time for the start of the worlds to start.

The 2008 WC was hosted in Canada.

Oh, and US "0-3" of A can? Who is in your too 5 hockey powers, just curious? :handclap:

in no particular order other than #1

Canada
Sweden
USA
Finlsnd
Czech Repbulic

Every single one of them has had better results in best on best tournaments than Russia

Russia hasn't won a true best on best tournament, at least at the pro level in what? 30 years? Russia hasn't even medaled at the last 3 Olympics let alone won

You don't belong in the top 5 the results simply aren't there.

If Russia is not a top 5 hockey power, then what is your top 5, I wonder?

It was quite a tall task to expect Russia "to get it done when it counts" yesterday against the top hockey team in the world in its backyard.

Was it a tall task in 2014 for Russia to get it done in Sochi- in your backyard? Fact of the matter is- i said it before to delusional posters like Yakushev72. They flat out got embarrassed in Sochi.

Russia- without a shadow of a doubt, is the most overrated hockey nation in the world. A true Paper Tiger. They have great individual players- but cannot get it done as a team. 1998 Olympics, 2002 Olympics, 2004 World Cup, 2006 Olympics, 2010 and 2014 Olympics- were true best on best, and Russia choked in each one.

People talk about the Soviet Super Teams in the 70's and 80's- fact of the matter is that they beat everyone's amateurs. If Canada were sending their best in the 70's and 80's, the Soviet Super Teams would have been beaten. The only thing Russia had yesterday was a solid goaltender that kept the game close. An overrated hockey nation.

Winning the World Championships, when everyone has their B and C teams, and Russia has their A teams- does not count. When Canada sent a solid team last year for the first time in a long time with Crosby in 2015- they slapped Russia around and blew them out.

[mod]

1998 Russia took silver (Canada did not medal)
2002 Russia took bronze

They haven't reached podium in the 3 last "best on best" tourneys, but ignoring other tournaments, like the World Juniors, for instance, when trying to make an ignorant argument like "Russia is not a hockey power" is disingenuous.

Czech Republic caught lightning in a bottle with 2 of the best of all time on the same squad in Hasek and Jagr. Going forward, they have just as much chance of ending up being folded into Team Europe as they do of reaching the finals in a best of best. To put them ahead of Russia would be quite unwise.
