They had some good chances regardless. That’s how good this power play is. The opponent kind of expects what we’re going to do, yet they still can’t stop it. Unless the goalie is Hasek, Roy, or Ullmark.
Honestly the need to try and make two PP units work. I’m still scratching my head as to why their best guy in front of the net wasn’t in there

Kakko is stringing good games together. He was all over the ice tonight. Defensively he has took a step. Offensively he is showing more and more flashes of the player the Rangers drafted. His analytics must be much much better this season. It’s looking like he’s found his game and it doesn’t matter who is with him. That’s a real good sign

.
. Fans need to be patient. Still a kid

Lafreniere had his best game so far and showed, as he had in a few other games, that he has that offensive nose to be in the right place. He’s a guy the puck finds. He could have had a hatty tonight with better puck luck. I expect that getting his first will give him a nice boost of confidence and a bit of jump and I think the points will start to stack up now. Consider those first six games his “preseason” since he didn’t get to have one. I think this will open the flood gates up for him.

Also a much more enjoyable game all around tonight because the team didn’t look listless and uninterested. It was an entertaining game with a rewarding ending. That’s all I really hope for this season. Kakko looked really engaged too. I’ll be over the moon if Laf starts producing at around .5 PPG now and Kakko keeps playing more like tonight.

Power play set up with 4RHS.
Panarin on the left wall is not a threat.
ADA on the top, is not a threat, besides getting his 'seeing-eye' wrister through
Fox on the left wall is not a threat
Buch in front is meh

Zibs is the only threat at bumper. It becomes predictable.

Puck possession means little because they're allowing you to pass back and forth and do barely anything with it.

1-3-1. Like all the big boy teams.

Kreider in front.
Zibs at bumper.
Panarin on the left dot. DOT not blue line wall.
Laf/Miller/Buch on the right dot.
ADA up top.

you can feed Panarin to shoot.
you can feed Laf/Miller/Buch to shoot.
you can setup Zibs in the slot.
ADA can get his wrist shot through where Zibs and Kreider can do work.

It's not rocket science, more options/threats = harder to defend = more success
I mean, they still had some great chances. I want to find a way to get Fox to stay on PP1, but it’s hard to argue with your idea.

And just a general question: Why is that called a 1-3-1? Isn’t the bumper down low?

I'll make another post about this because it deserves its own post. Only 7 games, but #3 in shots for and #5 in shots against. I don't think the team looks as good as those numbers because until today their offense just didn't look dangerous (today I missed most of the game so I can't say), but still that's damn good.

Edit: The Flyers are getting outshot by 11 shots and are 5-2. AV gonna AV.

Laf, Blackwell, Fox for me.

Thought they played an excellent game. Had it not been for the play of Ullmark, this would have been a rout.

I thought Panarin, Strome, Kreider, Lemme, ADA, and Smith were all much better. Shesterskin made a couple of big saves in the first. Fox was one of, if not the best skater on the ice. Zibs still looks like he's fighting it a little, but I think he's getting closer.

PK was much better tonight despite giving up that one goal.

Still wish that as a team they would shoot the puck more and drive the net for a rebound.

Should try this:

PP1 - The One and done formation
Kreider - Zib - Buch
Bread - ADA

PP2- The Young Gun formation
LAF - Strome (replace with Chytil)- Kakko
Miller - Fox
I like the idea of trying Miller there instead of Trouba. Not quite as hard of a shot, but it’s probably more accurate. And he has more skill.

1 man in front
3 guys essentially on the same plane; dot-high slot-dot
1 man up top

We haven't given up 30 or more shots since game 1. And even that was like 33/34.

#5 in the league. Imagine if Panarin, Mika, and Shesterkin were where they were last year. Just those 3.

I have a feeling these 2 young goalies like a steady, continuous workload if not, being outshot. Keeps them in it, engaged and focused, hence these off performances with lower shot totals early in the season.

They were running a 1-3-1, but sometimes they rotate out of it, you aren't always going to be in formation. I really don't see how you can complain about the PP tonight, they were on it. Only reason they didn't score was the opposing goaltender.

I totally agree. JJ was such a bad signing. Please more Smith and absolutely none of JJ going forward
It still baffles me that Quinn insists on playing JJ over Smith, an experienced vet who is more than serviceable. This is not some rookie kid that Quinn doesn’t trust who JJ is playing over, which is understandable in some cases. But even then, they would probably be a better choice over JJ. JJ is possibly the worst defenseman we’ve ever had. Worse than Staal. Worse than Girardi. Worse than Hajek. Worse than Kampfer. Worse than Gilmour. Worse than McIlrath. Worse than Raphael Diaz.

Machinehead tonight after the analytics and the win.

You dug deep there, with Diaz.

It worked unlike previous games because even though it was roughly a 1-3-1, you had DeAngelo back there. With Fox, there were two QBs basically, and DeAngelo being mobile also helped a bit with rotation. They were able to make high-low diagonal passes which they were unable to previous games.
