And Zacha will almost certainly play nine games...if Gomez came back where would Zacha slot in, the fourth line? It gives him an opportunity to win a spot, while not gifting him a spot. If he goes back to juniors you have plenty of options for third line LW/C

On the bench for 9 games :dunno: (I mean sit Gomez for 9 games)

You are going to tell me as planner you would plan around maybe this 18 takes a spot?

This is my last point on Gomez. It seems that Shero and Hynes have made their minds up about the Center depth on the team.

They are betting that Zacha is an impact immediate player. They are also betting that JJ will "Breakout" into a productive center.

They are set with Zajac and the bottom six and someone from the bottom six centering the fourth line.

They feel that Gomez hinders the development of Zacha and hurts the progress of the JJ.

That's a huge risk and you got to go with it.

Unless this is all a smokescreen for a trade and a center will be brought in.

Shero/Hynes are going all in and that comes from the top, you will see two scoring wingers brought in and Zacha is your impact star.

You have me at the edge of my seat. Tell me we're getting Corey Perry! Lie to me! Ohhh lie to me! hahaha just fooling around!

Read my post, not just the part you bold. It gives him a chance to win a spot, it's not planning on slotting him in as a regular - which I wouldn't do either. He might not even have a spot now if Boucher or someone else gets brought in or has a good camp.

I think they have plans for Kalinin as well.

There is no room because even if he goes back. You have Zajac, Rico, JJ as your established centers and other kids like Blandasi and Kahlin or are going to also be given chances.

People compared Zacha's points per game percentage to Johansen, well Johansen spent his following year in junior and he was also physically mature. Playing in the NHL is more than just physical maturity.

I'm on board with many others where I think 9 games wouldn't hurt, but I think having him on the NHL team all of this year is a huge mistake. We could have the next Ryan Johansen, but Johansen took a lot of time to develop. They shouldn't make the same mistake they made with Larsson.

mark my words, they'll sign a forward who can be used at center during FAF and say something along the lines of "we had an initial plan to use our current roster's center depth to give the young guys a fair shake, but when we saw ________ was available at the offer we made, we couldn't pass up the opportunity"

hello vermette

Well with Larsson it was different. It was either the AHL, NHL, or back in Sweden I'm pretty sure. There was no junior league for him to continue developing in, it was going to be in a professional league no matter what. And to be fair he was ready, he was good up until the injury.

I'd like for Zacha to get his few games in the NHL, and the coaching staff evaluate him and tell him what to work on then send him back to juniors. Let him dominate there, gain more confidence and be more hungry to come back to the NHL.

I like JJ, but I am not very hopeful.

His ESP/60 the last three years: 0.59, 0.25 and 0.81. That's very bad.

Those numbers probably go up a bit with better linemates, but still. Check out Gionta for comparison purposes: 0.75, 0.79 and 1.38.

Did they say that? I don't recall reading that.

Considering they are moving away from Gomez. They believe JJ is ready to contribute points, he didn't say it in many words but his actions and what he has stated suggests that he believes that JJ and Zacha can outproduce Gomez and add as well.

Don't be surprised if Zacha's here all year. If he's even 70% "ready" for the NHL, I don't see how they send him back to Sarnia. I wouldn't necessarily be happy with burning an ELC year, but its not the worst thing in the world to get acclimated to the NHL during a year where expectations are low to begin with.

Not really fair to compare Zacha to Larsson. Larsson had never played on NA ice and we were a better team his rookie year. I get where you're coming from, but the mistakes made with Larsson were largely down to DeBoer's inability to trust him and he was much slower to acclimate to the game here. The constant yo-yoing to the AHL was not good for his confidence, but I don't think sending him back to Sweden the year he was drafted would've been smart either. He needed to play in North America asap. At the very least Zacha's been in NA a bit and obviously a forward is much more likely to develop quicker than a defenseman. I think a better comparison would be Matteau, but even there they're very different players and a different talent level. If Zacha's here this season, he'll have earned the opportunity. I'm confident this particular staff will make the right decision. I can't sit here months before training camp and say he has to go back to juniors though. Plenty of 18 year old forwards have had fruitful seasons at that age.

Over the least three years, among forwards who have played at least 1,000 ES minutes, Josefson is 2nd to last in even strength scoring per minute. 372/373. Players above him include Malhotra, Rinaldo, Bollig, Boll, Glass, Cleary, Adams and Neil.

Hard pressed to think he's 40-50 point player.

What do you think/expect a combo of JJ and PZ contribute? Because anything short of 40-60 points from both to offset what Gomez could contribute and did.

I would be very surprised if Josefson scores 30 points. He has been the 2nd worst scoring forward in the NHL over the last three years, below fourth liner pluggers and enforcers.

I would also be surprised if Zacha scored 30 points. He was below a PPG in juniors and probably needs a year of dominance there before moving to the NHL. Maybe he progress quickly and pulls a Jordan Staal-type rookie season.

I would have re-signed Gomez.

That's my problem with Shero's proclamation. They still need a Gomez or similar player.

People have to get the short term thinking out of their heads, this season's not about making the playoffs at all costs or keeping the best short term patches at the expense of finding out what we have (or don't) on the roster.

I doubt Josefson gets 30 points, but with proper line mates I don't think +20 is out of the question.

That would be VERY encouraging given the development hell he's gone through the last 3-4 years. A 20 point center who can play PK has his uses.

Again, Marcus Kruger is the guy we should be hoping Josefson turns into. It's not unreasonable to ask and that player is quite important to his team.

I know they are way different players but he's route to NHL I think could be a lot similar to Galchenyuk. Both played Sarnia had the same coach. On the Canadiens board they have discussed a lot if he should have taken one more year in Sarnia. Galchenyuk did not play he's draft year because of he's injury but he had a great rookie year in NHL. But on the defensive side of the puck he is still way behind. I think Zacha is a better prospect but imagine a full year in Sarnia playing top C and playing with our own J. Jacobs who is going to play a lot of minutes with chehyryn #cantSpellhesName

Except a player with "proper linemates" should be putting up more than 20 points. Josefson is a liability on a team that is hoping to make the playoffs in a couple years if he's getting second or third line minutes and only scoring 20 points.

I'm glad you brought up Kruger. His ESP/60 over the last three years is 1.28 compared to Josefson's 0.56. Kruger's most common linemates the last three years were Carcillo, Nordstrom, Smith and Bollig.

I'm all for the youth movement, I just think it's foolish to note bring Gomez back because they want Josefson to have an increased role. Josefson won't be a top nine player in my mind, so we're not wasting his development by bringing back Gomez.
