His competitiveness has nothing to do with rust. With him not seeing in game action and only seeing practice shots for an extended period of time being rusty in unavoidable. He went almost 4 full weeks without seeing any game time. There's not a goalie alive who's not going to be rusty in that scenario. Especially a goalie who has never really had a layoff outside of the offseason that long for his entire career. He's always been bad after long breaks and takes time to get back into it but it's different knowing you have time to feel out the rhythm and game to get back up to speed, the mental aspect is different in this case.

The way to get past it is to ease into the game, play a tight first period and hopefully feel the puck early so you can get a good feeling and ease into the game speed and start to get comfortable. What you don't want is to take a penalty 28 seconds into the game against a team with a PP that owns you.
Tl;dr

I’ve never seen a player defended more than Hank. I get it, but it’s exhausting. Excuse after excuse. Why can’t we just accept that he’s on a sharp decline? There’s no getting around that. Age is age. Hank was great. He isn’t any longer.
