The troubling part of the faceoff problem can’t be shown in a chart. There’s been next to no battle by the wingers. In the game today your wingers need to battle to help win face offs, very rarely are fade offs won clean.

So not only are our centers getting beat but once they lose there’s no tie ups, no battles. It’s indicative of a lack of compete level. These guys should be physical and engaged on every faceoff, but they’re not. They’re shying away and they’re just lollygagging. Expecting the win to be clean and if it’s not a clean win, oh well guess we lost it.

It’s on the players and it’s also on Quinn.

I knew this would happen. 1 great year for Panarin and 6 average years but bad years for him type of seasons lmfao. His effort has been awful. As we are all fans, fans can tell when someone tries and someone does not. Do the Rangers really have to have players wear the A, because these players don’t deserve that privilege.

They are. They are 46.6% last year (second to last) with the same four centers. And yes it's second to last but it's minimal spread. You can't tell me there's a huge difference between winning 46.6% and 50% of faceoffs. It's a difference of 2 faceoff wins per game, on average. They actually should currently be better on faceoffs than they were last year with Chytil out as he's one of the worst in the league on them.

In terms of "important faceoffs" they are about average as Zibanejad takes those and he is average. Sometimes Strome takes them and he's a bit below average.
Fair enough. These 65/35 70/30 games ain’t cutting it though. Suggests to me that their variance is higher than we think.

I also want to know why they are bad at them.

Immediate changes

you have to get lafreniere going replace strome with him on pp1

get Tony back on pp1 and fox back on PP2

Strome can play with kakko and buch on PP2

get Johnson off this team

kreider Mika Kakko
Panarin Strome Buchnevich
Lafreniere Howden Digiuseppe
Lemieux Rooney Blackwell

ride shesterkin for a few games here win or lose.

How is this possible right now? Two top top picks and neither have even come close to distinguishing themselves. It’s not like they are playing on the 4th line too. It’s just so frustrating

Dude stop making sense and go away! seriously tho any way u can get this post to JG somehow?
We all predicted Strome should be no where near the first pp. he still is.
We said from the first moment JJ was signed he would play and it would be a disaster.
Also now I think some are realizing ADA should be on that first pp.
And yes we will ride or die with Igor. I’m still confident he is the man.

LA thought he was a 2C last year. Then tucked his tail between his legs and blamed everyone but himself. Instead of working on his game, he drowned his sorrows in fortnite.
Is Kravstov game better served on the 4th line or getting 20 minutes a game in AHL? Clearly there was a disconnect between the organization's message and what Kravstov was thinking. Clearly in the end he understand the message.

If you are expecting Kaako and AL to be that kind of impact players already then why do we have Panarin and Ziba? You need vets to carry the load a bit to shelter the kids. Do you remember how bad Washington and Pitt were when Crosby and Ovi were going off? They were getting 20+ min a night because they had some straight scrubs on the team. If you are asking the kids to be that kind of impact to carry this team then expect a few more lotteries.

At some point the players need to be held accountable. At this rate, with how many of our key guys not performing there is going to be some sort of shakeup. Even Gallant got fired from Vegas. Good coaches get fired because at one point or another its the easiest way to make a shakeup in the Cap era. But firing Quinn like he is the sole problem....there is zero guarantee this team gets better with a different coach because of the coach. It's more likely like "oh shit what we're doing isn't working"
I think Quinn gives the core vets too much leeway. I know he needs his vets to pull themselves out of their asses and he can't tough love them like they're kids, that's not gonna fly with older guys, but at some point you need to cut your losses and say it's X's and O's that I'm breaking you guys up from the power play, and I'm going to use some other guys on the penalty kill.

If you would have told me before the pandemic that one of the hardest working players on the team would be Kappo Kakko, I would have been surprised. But honestly, no one has worked harder. Plenty of players have worked as much -- Blackwell, PDG, Howden, Lindgren, but no one has outworked Kappo Kakko. Kudos to the young man.

Maybe they should have started like Buchnevich did when AV was here, Glass over Buchnevich or Buchnevich with no good 4th liners and I hated AV. Maybe we need a goon to dress over these kids or put the Kakko and Lafy with Rooney . :sarcasm:

He’s been pulling up a lot that’s for sure. In every zone. Lots of giveaways too, which is what I’m seeing. But hey anyway you cut it - he’s pressing and everyone needs to be better
Last year was magical in that everything clicked. Right now he seems to have lost a step and also the other teams are playing him way tighter. He likes to curl back and dangle his way through the neutral zone. That zone is much more clogged right now with everyone playing 1-3-1 or 1-2-2.

For the same reason we acquired players that were superstars on their previous teams and then come here and suck (minus Panarin)

Tony D is — or at least was — one of our top 3 most important players. He is playing with zero confidence out there and does very little right now. What happened??

It’s so simple and so obvious. That’s what makes Quinn that much more infuriating right now.

I agree. I expected them to play like ass for the first 10 games or so and then get better as their timing returns. I just never expected them to find different ways to lose every night it seems. They are also going to miss Chytil a great deal.

The strange thing is I honestly liked way more than I disliked from games two through 5.

Its almost weird that they aren’t 4-2 at this point.

I'm in a more cynical mood this evening but... Kakko has 2 points in 6 games and he's shooting 20%

Lafreniere has only 9 shots in 6 games.

These aren't unlucky streaks, they're just bad performances.

I’m sorry, but we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

The first power play unit is absolutely losing games for them right now. It's not given them anything or any momentum in the games. I would go as far as saying it is giving the opposition the momentum.

You need your PP to win you some games if all other things in the game being equal. And taking bad penalties at crucial points in the game.

Problem is he is not very good to defend though.
It is like Quinn Hughes miss Tanev this season with Canucks.

Think about how stupid Gorton is.

We wanted to rebuild right?

We dumped almost every single vet so ALMOST no one was around to show the kids the ropes, right?

Then we signed a coach who literally was a complete mystery box bc he had never been a head coach in the NHL so HE couldn't show them the NHL ropes either.

Then we signed Kreider to an enormous, baffling extension when he's known for being good but massively underachieving bc he never put together the game in his head completely. That's our main veteran we have to show the kids the ropes.

We traded a 2nd to be rid of Staal.

But with that money we DIDNT re-sign fast who was a heart and soul guy who busts his ass and gets the most out of his talent....to re-sign Strome...another wishy washy headcase with an incomplete game.

Oh and Jack Johnson...

This team is on Gorton. I said it before and Ill say it again, he has done an absolute shit job and isn't catching nearly enough flak for it bc he lucked into the lotto balls and a bunch of guys looked good overseas.

Well guess what? The guys overseas haven't done jack or shit for the NYR yet and so far the ones that DO come over seem to struggle for quite some time. This team was put together MUCH more poorly than it should have been. That remains the same regardless of if the NYR un-f*** themselves sometime soon.

No worries, hope you’re in the right on this one

I will say I feel pretty confident about this one.

I think if he vets pick up their play, it will open up space and create more opportunity for the young talent.

But neither Laf or Kakko look outmatched out there, and they’re getting their chances. If they weren’t, or they were getting beat all over the ice, I’d be concerned. But we’re not seeing that. The difference between the two of them having nicer HockeyDB.com numbers really isn’t huge pivot away from where they are currently. If they keep playing the way they are, and don’t fall off, the rest will follow for them.
