Eh, I don't completely agree with this. There were a few times where Mika or Kreider were fighting for the puck in a corner and Laf was the second man in, and he was a bit slow/lazy in helping him out and wasn't showing a lot of fight. In general he isn't winning puck battles (like KK last season). That surprised me given what I had heard about him. I think physically he is just feeling weak compared to the competition, like KK.
Yeah. He's been tentative, I've noticed that as well.

So go with George next game? Maybe make Fox and Miller play the full 60 mins? Too much?

I'd agree with this had we not signed Panarin. Now the flip has switched and the pressure is on to win a Cup while he is still in his prime. Aka the next 2 years. As evident as keeping Kreider post-Panarin but trading away two better players in Miller and Hayes pre-Panarin.

Next two years?????

Tell me what teams build for a two year window. NYR will have other stars, and Panarin will likely still be a first line player 5 years from now, unless he ages poorly. Most cup teams have 2-3 players in their mid 30's who are still playing well. I'll admit, the last two cup championship teams have been super young. But so will the Rangers be in 3-4 years. The big debate when we signed Panarin centered around this, and I think the general consensus was that he's likely to be "The old guy" in his early to mid 30's when we are hopefully deep in the postseason.

To my knowledge the goal this season was to make the playoffs, and build into contention from there in the following seasons.

So you really thought the rangers were going to make a run this year?

Watch, by mid-season things are going to start coming together. I would be a lot more concerned if our vets were killing it but our young players showed no improvement. Once Panarin and Mika get the rust off and our goaltending starts building back their confidence you will see a much better team.

It will be a good sign for next season, but this year was never going to be about competing for the cup.

I do have to say I’m disappointed in lafreniere’s battle level for sure. Looks like and hesitant going into the corners and the middle of the ice. I really think he just needs that moment that lets him realize he belongs.

The Rangers and their track record of big money contracts does not exactly inspire confidence. Who is the last player that even finished out their contract? Or other than Lundqvist even came close to finishing it?

This is the same team that signed Gomez and traded him 2 years into his contract. The same GM that made a move that should have kicked off a rebuild by trading Stepan and then 3 days later made a put us over the top as a contender move in signing Shattenkirk.

So yeah you really cant blame me for being concerned with this organizations lack of long term planning/execution.

But at the same time, they want track meets and they don't know how to play any other way. That's a big fundamental problem.
Letting only 4 shots on goal in the 3rd period does not indicate a track meet. I thought the team played a really good defensive game tonight. Shesty let in some softies and that was the difference.

No I can’t blame you for that. And yes our record with long term Ufa deals has been horrifying.

But with the amount of talent that this team has an is building, it’s not hard to imagine a player like Panarin or Kreider getting traded halfway into their contracts, while they are still playing well so we could actually get a return for them.

If Lafreniere isn’t a star capable of replacing Panarins level in 2-3 years then we may be in trouble. A lot of the length of the window depends on our young players and how they develop is my point- not necessarily just the vets we have now.

When was the last time the rangers signed someone of Panarin's calibre and age to such a contract? And don't say Gaborik or Nash. They were older, not as good, and had a history of injuries.

I meant that's the type of game they want to play, not talking specifically about tonight. And track meet is not the best description. I mean more like they want to play a finesse tic tac toe game.

Just a really shitty loss. This team wins this one and the Devils game and its an entirely different script. But they didn’t.

Wondering when this team is going to give a complete 60 minute effort.

A young talented team trying to dangle and finesse their way to victories is actually kind of expected. They are going to make mistakes and learn they can't do that as the season goes along.

But the culprits have been mostly the vets doing this. The first power play unit with all that passing around the outside and forcing those cross ice passes.

Anyway I hope you're right in general.

Panarin's contract, although expensive, has turned out pretty well so far. You don't know how the Kreider contract is going to turn out either. He had good year last year and it's only game 5. You have to have some vets on a team as you can't play all 21yo's. The Rangers are already the youngest team in the league.

I feel more confident about Panarin's contract. He has been consistently elite throughout his career and relies on a mix of his IQ and skill. Kreider on the other hand, I thought that was a much riskier contract as he has been wildly inconsistent throughout his entire career. He also relies on his physical attributes much more than anything else, and that's usually the first thing to go as a player ages.

And this draft sucks. I mean really sucks. I’d trade this pick if I could
Yea outside of maybe the top 4-5 players it doesn’t look very strong. The 1st Rd is also going to be very Defensemen heavy with a lot looking like projects that are 2-3 years away. Of course I’m sure there may be some diamonds in the rough but I’m not so sure we get one lol

Didn’t understand why so many on here wanting him extended. That contract already looks bad and it’s gonna be worse as he ages and his speed declines. Rangers as an organization still haven’t learned that certain players aren’t worth long term extension especially homegrown talent.
Kreids is very streaky. Always has been and will continue to be. He’ll go on a 10 game tear soon and people will love him again. He’s also one of the better net front presences in the league, when the PP stops over passing and kreids starts deflecting them in or banging home the rebounds it won’t look nearly as bad, He will continue to be a force in front of the net for the majority of his deal and with him being a physical fitness freak I don’t see his speed declining rapidly either tbh

I’ve noticed this as well though I think in tonight’s third period there were times he carried the puck up the ice on rushes with purpose and looked more confident. And there was the PP late in the 3rd that ran through him where he generated three possible scoring chances that were all flubbed (Howden x2 and Trouba).

I think this definitely more of an acclimation thing compounded with this being his first hockey in 10 months. We should’ve underestimate that, you said earlier in this thread and it’s a good point that this is a factor that none of his predecessors has had to deal with. I also think once he scores a big goal or makes a big play in general that it’s going to click on for him and he’ll feel like he belongs.
